The Okavango Delta is the jewel in Botswana's Crown and one of the finest safari destinations in Africa. This vast wilderness offers a unique combination of land and water based safari based from superb low density camps. The Delta is formed as the Okavango River flows from the highlands of Angola and disperses into a broad inland delta as the river disperses into countless small channels.
The Delta is divided into private concessions and some National Park areas. What marks the concessions out is the vast areas of land they cover and the minimal visitors they take at any one time. This creates an exclusive wilderness safari experience that consequently comes with a higher price than elsewhere in Africa. Wildlife is apparent in prodigious numbers. Elephant and buffalo are present year round in large numbers. Lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and wild dog thrive and the reintroduced Rhino rounds up the big five. The Delta is alive during the dry season from May to October as the wildlife are drawn to the water. December to April is the green season, wildlife is more sparse, rates are reduced but there is still much to see and lots of baby animals around.
Camps are split into those offering land & water safari, water only and land only depending on their location. you are likely to see more wildlife from a vehicle, but drifting down the Delta's channels in a traditional mokoro is incredibly relaxing and serene and a wonderful way to take in the landscape and wildlife, big and small.
