Overview

Kanana Camp is a ‘Ker & Downey’ property on the Xudum River in the Okavango delta, Northern Botswana. With some fantastic views and strong water based safaris in the wet season, this is an interesting alternative to intensive, big game safari locations.

The main areas of camp are raised on decking and include lovely lounge and dining areas built around an old fig tree. Steps lead down to a plunge pool and a cosy campfire area.

Game viewing is very much the focus of this camp and day and night game drives are led by professional rangers. Whilst vehicle drives are the main activity November-May, annual floods change the landscape drastically and a network of open floodplains is perfect for water based safaris between June and October. The camp runs motorboat safaris as well as the more relaxing option of glass bottomed Mokoro (canoe) safaris. Fishing trips can be organised as well as a night underneath the stars on a remote sleep out deck to immerse you in the sights and sounds of the bush.

Accommodation at Kanana Camp is made up of seven safari tents and one family tent. Traditional and comfortable but perhaps slightly smaller than you might hope, each tent is ensuite and has large walk in showers. The tents are spread far apart for privacy and all have private viewing decks.

Children over ten years old are welcome at Kanana. Whilst no specific children’s programme is in place, guides will do their best to tailor activities around families.

Kanana is a great mid-range camp with access to a superb private concession and some great wildlife. Primarily a wet camp during the high season, this is a slow paced, more peaceful delta experience with particularly strong bird viewing.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever
