The Family Safari Specialists

Family Safaris

Our specialist safari team have vast experience of designing safaris and all have children of our own. Over the years, we've dragged our kids on safari throughout Africa and know from first hand experience what makes for a great family safari.

South Africa is currently one of the most affordable safari destinations. Food and drink is invariably excellent and guiding standards are high. We find South Africa is best suited to those families looking for a short safari experience combined with wider travels in Cape Town, the Garden Route, the Drakensberg and KwaZulu Natal Wetlands areas.

Kenya is arguably our favourite safari destinations for families. It boasts incredible wildlife and wilderness and some of the best family friendly safari camps on the Continent (e.g. Laikipia Wilderness and Mara Bush Houses). Kenya also tends to be relatively good value and combines well with the beaches of the Kenya Coast.

Like Kenya, Tanzania offers a stunning wildlife experience and good combinations with Indian Ocean beaches on Zanzibar. Whilst it doesn't have the superb family focused camps of Kenya, Tanzania offers an excellent balance of safari, beaches and safety.

For the ultimate exclusive safari experience, Botswana's Okavango Delta is unlike anything else on the Continent. Prices can be high, but Botswana is one of the safest countries in Africa and the wildlife experience is second to none.

  • Everything was exceptionally well arranged and the whole trip, from checking in on line and printing out the outward journey boarding cards from home, until return to Heathrow, was completely seamless.

Although arriving slightly earlier than scheduled, we didn't have to wait before being collected at Nairobi by Elijah, our guide and Samuel the driver. On being told that we had hardly slept at all on the outward journey, they took us to a small B&B place they use (sorry, I've forgotten the name of the place) and we were able to rest/sleep for some 3 hours before setting off on our adventure. This was very much appreciated by us as that first day was full on after that.

They looked after us really well and both were very knowledgeable and good company and were flexible to our needs, with nothing being too much trouble for them.

The accommodation you picked for us was spot on. We were particularly taken with Sunbird Lodge (I could have spent the whole week there if it were not for being on the move due to the nature of the trip), which was quite informal and extremely friendly. We then moved on to the Maji Moto Eco Camp, where again everything was fine. Having stayed in similar places before, at my age now, the one night suited well and I was surprised when Dan was so taken with the place that he would have liked to stay another night! I think the camp fire might have had something to do with it. The visit to the school was also well worth it from Dan's perspective.

On then to Ilkeliani and I concur with what you say about it being so well priced for what it offers, that it is a good recommendation. This was slightly more formal at mealtimes than Sunbird Lodge but nevertheless, the staff were equally friendly. As adults, both my husband and myself enjoyed the food although the feedback I provided on their customer satisfaction questionnaire was that perhaps the evening meals could possibly have slight variations for children. We didn't see any signs of the suspended footbridge and as we didn't ask about it, I don't know whether it's still there or not.

I have to say that the beds in both Sunbird and Ilkeliani were very, very, comfortable.

The Mayfair Southern Sun was again a good choice although I think the room we had was perhaps a standard twin room. There were two what I call "three quarters" sized beds, i.e. larger than a single but not quite a double bed size, which meant it was a bit of a squeeze for 2 persons in one bed.

Both the Giraffe Centre and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Sanctuary were ideal additions to the itinerary. We had a 10 year old who was reluctant to leave Kenya!

  • A fabulous and memorable holiday to Africa and a big thank you to Lisa at Tourdust for her in depth knowledge and for designing our once in a lifetime trip.

The original thoughts were to stay in Cape Town and then go on safari. After many discussions and a lot of patience from Lisa we settled on Capetown, a safari in Botswana and Victoria Falls. It turned out to be the most special and amazing holiday that we have been on.

Cape Town accommodation was great, modern, clean, spacious and close to the V&A. The views at the back were of Table Mountain! We opted for guided tours to Cape of Good Hope and whale watching. Our guide called Chris was excellent, he was very knowledgeable and chatted to us alot and was great with my children.

Next was Botswana and Muchenje Lodge. The location was fantastic with views over the Chobe river. Right from the start we were looked after so well and the staff were so friendly and welcoming. We went on lots of different safari drives from early morning, late evening and all day ones and my favourite was on the river itself as we were able to get really close to the elephants, hippos and crocodiles. Our guides were brilliant (particularly Rambo) and helped us to find all the animals we wanted to see, even the elusive wild dogs and leopards.
Meals were at set times, which was lovely as it meant we could talk to the other guests and hear about their day and it was nice that some of the guides joined us as well. We also loved the singing and dancing that the staff did after one meal.

Final destination Zambia and Victoria Falls, where we stayed at Waterberry Lodge on the banks of the Zambezi. An amazing location right on the river bank.
We did a guided tour to Victoria Falls and yet again we had a brilliant tour guide.
From our lodge we did a river cruise, saw a magnificent sunset and we tried our hand at fishing which was great fun.

I would love to go back to Africa again to visit some other countries and I will definitely use Tourdust again. Thank you so much Lisa.
