Overview

Marrakech is a city that you just can't help but fall in love with. Categorised as a Unesco World Heritage site, the focal point of the ancient medina is the world famous Djemma el Fna. The large square comes to life at night with food stalls, story tellers, snake charmers and acrobats. Away from the square, are the enticing souks, which consist of small winding roads full of colourful market stalls selling anything from slippers, to herbs and spices to ornaments. For the more culturally inclined, the ancient Bahia and Badi palaces offer an intriguing insight into how the imperial kings used to live. Here, you will be staying in a stylish boutique riad (Riad Dar Hanane), a luxurious retreat from the souks and busy medina with a central courtyard and roof terrace. The stunning High Atlas Mountains lie an hour and a half's drive from the Medina in Central Marrakech and provide a welcome contrast from the chaos of the City. Valleys are dotted with ancient Berber Villages consisting of simple mud houses built almost on top of each other. The views are magnificent, with arid valley sides, lush valley floors with sparkling mountain streams and of course the towering peaks that the range is renowned for. Here we recommend staying in Douar Samra, a a very tastefully developed traditional village building with gorgeous gardens and terraces and a genuine sense of authenticity. With plenty of time to relax, our mountain guides will take you on a gentle stroll for an unforgettable Berber picnic overlooking the majestic views. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore the villages and get an understanding of the traditional Berber way of life.

If you want to experience more of Morocco, then we recommend including a cooking class at La Maison Arab in Marrakech, a visit out to the Tinmal Mosque on the Tizi n Test pass and consider a multi-day trek to some of the more remote and traditional valleys and villages which can be done either in basic village accommodation or staying in serious comfort. Ask to include any of these options.

We always recommend our customers choose to stay in a traditional riad in the medina for the experience. This usually means they don't have a swimming pool (at most a small plunge pool). Likewise there are no hotels with pools in the High Atlas Mountains where the views are best and the villages most traditional. If you want some relaxed time by the pool, then we would recommend either swapping a riad for a stay at the lovely Les Cinq Djebellas (in the Marrakech Palmerie) or swapping Douar Samra for a stay at ultra chic Domaine Malika in the Ouirgane Valley in the Atlas Mountains.

When is best?

This holiday is possible any time of year.

The summer months can get very hot, but it is perfectly manageable. Spring and Autumn are arguably the best time of year, with wild flowers in spring and stunning vibrant red Walnut groves in late autumn.

Is it for me?

This is a relaxing itinerary staying at two of our favourite properties in Morocco, Riad Dar Hanane and Douar Samra. Both exude a contemporary and indulgent feel whilst maintaining a strong sense of place and authenticity and guarantee a warm personal welcome.

We include a gentle guided walk in the Atlas Mountains, which is an opportunity to enjoy the scenery, explore the traditional villages and experience Berber hospitality with a superb picnic. We are acclaimed for our multi-day treks in the Atlas Mountains and we use the same superb guide and cook teams for our gentle day walks. Your guide will suggest a walk suitable to you, whether you only want to walk 30 minutes or all day. Because the walk is tailored to your needs, there are no fitness requirements. If you are looking for more strenuous trekking, please take a look at our collection of multi-day treks in the Atlas Mountains.

  • Thanks for organising an excellent holiday for us. It's my first time using Tourdust and I've been really impressed and will certainly be recommending you to friends and family. You provided an excellent level of service all the way through, and the bespoke nature of the trip was fantastic whilst being really good value for money.
    Key highlights:
    - Le Kasbah de Toubkal blew us away - one not to miss!
    - The trek was amazing and my kids loved it. The camping was really fun, the food was excellent, and I'd particularly call out our guide Rashid who was fantastic show especially with my kids.
    - Riad Adore was outstanding - far exceeding my expectations - it was beautiful and we were very well looked after
    - Le Doux Tour was luxurious and a nice relaxing way to end the holiday.
    - Logistics were great and our main driver Mustapha was brilliant

If there was one build / thing I would change, it's a very small one but some candles / lanterns to use in the evening whilst camping would have made it easier to stay outside for a bit longer.

  • We had a fantastic time and were very impressed with the smooth organisation throughout, so please pass my thanks on to the team and in particular to Ben who suggested and planned our stay. Waking up on the morning of my 30th in the mountains and hiking up to a waterfall in the snow was certainly the best memory which will stay with us for years!
We felt the riad in Marrakech was wonderful and were very looked after by the hosts. I think we should have perhaps tried to be a bit more organised with sightseeing as it is so hard to navigate the city and a lot of walking. In hindsight a guide would be good even though we never feel we need one being stubborn travellers.
The trek was impressive and Mohammed and Samir were good fun. It was challenging but the right level for us and we really felt it was a great achievement.
Lastly, we both really, really rated Domaine Malika which is hands down the best hotel we have stayed in (I used to stay in plenty of 5 * European and LHW hotels in a previous job? so that's a high praise for us).
We thought we'd been checked into the biggest room in the place and it was just the basic room. The staff were brilliant and the pool/food/décor all wonderful. Next time, we would head straight here, take a day taxi into Marrakech, and then a day or two trek away from the hotel as we loved it so much.

  • The overall service from Tour Dust (Rebecca and you) was fantastic and we couldn’t have asked for more helpful, informed advice. Everything went without a hitch. We liked everywhere we stayed apart from Dar Adrar which was really just a little too basic. The food was excellent but I would have been reluctant to sleep there had we the option. We were also all (other guest included) quite keen on a drink (beer/glass of wine) after a hard day’s walking- it might be worth adding this as an option somewhere given nowhere in Imlil serves it but they’re happy for you to bring? I wouldn’t know where to find it to buy so that wasn’t really an option. Friend also holidaying in the Atlas that week stayed in a hotel elsewhere and were happily served alcohol.
Riad Due was nice and easy to find which is a big plus in the medina but quite dull/too quiet for us for four nights’ stay- it had very little atmosphere but the service was good.
Our guide, Larsan, and mule/muleteer, Hussein, were excellent. Larsan was just the right blend of helpful and informative but not intrusive. Hussein cooked beautifully and the mule was in very good condition which was good to see.
La Pause was great but we weren’t told that they only accepted cash so were caught out when we paid for an extra bottle of wine and a soft drink or two- luckily we just had enough to cover it. Also their check-out is at 10am, rather than11am as our transfer thought so we were left twiddling our thumbs and having to call the Marrakech office.

The advice and service you gave us was significantly better than substantially higher-end travel agents we have used before (and paid through the nose for) and we were generally very impressed so thank you. Your flexibility and responsiveness was really fantastic- well done.
