The main focus of any trip to Peru is often a visit to the world famous Unesco World Heritage site of Machu Picchu. Discovered just 100 years ago, this mysterious citadel is an impressive sight. The perfectly constructed terraces and ancient building surrounded by mountains covered in cloud forest lend a magical feel to the place, which is all the more special when you arrive having trekked through the mountains.
Peru isn't just about crumbling ruins and ancient Incas, however. For those with an interest in culture, Lima, Arequipa and Cusco are all vibrant cities waiting to be enjoyed. A third of the country is mountainous, making it a mecca for those who enjoy the adventurous side of life. White water rafting, trekking and horse riding are all possible, as are boat trips on South America's highest lake; Lake Titicaca. East of the Andes, the landscape is covered in lush jungle. Home to jaguar, pumas, over 1,700 species of birds and more insects than in the whole of the UK, it offers a fascinating contrast to the mountains.
