EnquireHotel El Mapi is a large, bustling hotel in Peru’s Aguas Calientes, the nearest town to the renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu, an unusually well-preserved ancient lost citadel perched dramatically on a mountain ledge nearly 8,000 feet high. The property belongs to the Inkaterra portfolio and is conveniently located a short walk from the town centre, easily accessible at the beginning or end of treks to Machu Picchu. It’s a lively, ‘no frills’ hotel offering good value for money and some very respectable facilities and services.
There are no fewer than 122 Superior Deluxe rooms and eight Suites, all of which come with floor-to-ceiling windows for plenty of natural light along with en-suite bathrooms with shower, bathrobes and complimentary toiletries. Other amenities common to all rooms include a hair dryer, a minibar and a TV with plenty of channels. Blackout curtains for the windows are supplied for those who wish not to be woken by the morning sun.
Aguas Calientes sits at an altitude of 6,690 feet and the hotel can provide oxygen for anyone struggling with the change in elevation. La Cafeteria, the hotel’s restaurant, is open for three meals a day, with breakfast and lunch served as buffets and dinner served a la carte and packed lunches can also be pre-ordered. In addition, there’s a bar serving local and international alcoholic beverages, along with a range of light snacks. The organic Spa del Bosque is on the top floor and offers a good range of treatments and captivating views of the nearby cloud forest.
For many, this is the perfect base for trekking the Inca Trail. However, there’s a good variety of excursions to other local archaeological sites and points of interest on offer. The hotel is family friendly and there are plenty of outings in the area for all age groups.
We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!
The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.
I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.
The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.
All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).
From my seven-year-old son:
I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.
In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

We just wanted to thank you for an absolutely amazing holiday. Everything went exactly to plan and we were blown away with the quality of the guides, transport and accommodation. The itinerary was perfect for our family with a great mix of guided and free days and the different destinations complemented each other well. We will definitely be using Tourdust again for our next trip! Particular highlights were the Ha Long Bay cruise, Hanoi, and the morning cycle tour in Siam Reap
