Overview

Hotel Pakaritampu is a charming and comfortable guest house that serves as an ideal base for anyone wishing to make the iconic trek to the magical and ancient Inca citadel, Machu Picchu. This simple property is located in the pretty town of Ollantaytambo at the very heart of Peru’s Sacred Valley, a stunningly beautiful mountain region in the Andean highlands that was once the centre of the mighty Inca Empire. Nowadays, the valley is known for its spectacular natural scenery and its collection of beautifully preserved ruins and colonial-era buildings, not to mention the vibrant local communities where traditional ways of life continue to this day. The hotel is surrounded by well-landscaped gardens and it’s possible to explore picturesque Ollantaytambo, with its Inca-era grid of cobblestoned streets, traditional adobe buildings and babbling irrigation channels, on foot. The town is known in particular for the ruins of a massive Inca fortress with large stone terraces which stretch up the hillside above the small town. There are also plenty of activities to enjoy from the hotel ranging from mountain biking to horse riding, rafting or visiting local markets and towns, archaeological ruins, or even a pretty waterfall surrounded by traditional Inca buildings.

The hotel room categories range from Standard Rooms, to Superior Rooms and Suites, with various configurations available. All of the rooms come with amenities such as a TV with cable channels, a safe and a hairdryer. Toiletries and drinking water are provided free of charge, and extra bedding can be provided on request. For families, the larger Suite is recommended, as it has both a twin room and a double room, along with separate living and dining areas.

The restaurant, Mijuna Wasi, serves food all day from a menu which offers a range of both local Andean and international dishes. Breakfast is served buffet-style, while lunch and dinner can be chosen from the buffet, or a la carte. Guests can request in-room dining for breakfast and packed lunches are available for those spending the day out exploring.

The hotel provides the perfect base for those wishing to hike the iconic Inca Trail. Some twenty-six miles in length, this highly rewarding trail passes through breath-taking mountain scenery, lush cloud forests and fascinating ancient ruins and culminates with a visit to the ancient and awe-inspiring citadel of Machu Picchu. Widely regarded as one of the best treks in the world, it takes four days to complete, though there are shorter routes available for those with less time on their hands.

  • I was also just about to email you to thank you and the team for arranging yet again, another wonderful experience.

Mount Kenya was spectacular and wild - I think I prefer it to Kili in many ways. The entire support team was professional, friendly and all round fantastic in making sure that we were safe, well fed and well looked after. In particular, we would commend Peter the guide as well as Paul one of the porters who doubled-up as his deputy on summit day. Our route was often shrouded in mist and rain that rapidly gathered in the valleys and moorlands, and we were very impressed at how Peter managed to navigate us safely through all of that notwithstanding. In addition, we loved learning about the history of Mount Kenya from him in the evenings. And ofcourse, I was blown away by the lovely birthday surprise at the end complete with balloons and a delicious cake that had journeyed with us from day 1. One thing we might recommend because of the sudden change in weather (it would sometimes get extremely cold and wet) is for the equipment list to be a little bit more detailed in terms of its recommendations e.g. layers to be moisture-wicking, walking boots be waterproof, doubling up on socks to avoid blisters etc.

El Karama is a beautiful conservancy and the lodge a true labour of love. Great hospitality in a relaxed environment. Delicious, fresh food. We enjoyed the drives, even if we didn't see much wildlife as the heavens opened on us for the last two outings. However, since it was very much geared towards families, I am not sure if I would stay again without kids. That said, I think it was perfect for a 3d/2n stay post mountain, and a much better choice than flying to the masai mara given the limited time we had.

Our transits were smooth. Samuel the driver was always on time, drove safely and kept the vehicle clean.

So it was a brilliant experience and one which I certainly will cherish for some time to come. It was great to work with you for a third time, and I certainly hope it won't be the last

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”
