Thailand is the perfect destination for families wanting to combine reasonably priced tropical beach bliss with a buzzing cultural and food experience.
Relatively cheap for a tropical long haul destinations Thailand offers more than just a beach holiday and it is still possible to avoid the crowds of backpackers and beach-floppers if you now where to go and where to stay.
The key in designing a family holiday in Thailand is not to do too much and nor too little. Try to fit to many temples and night markets in and you'll have serious trouble dragging the kids away from the cooling hotel pool. Likewise, although it can be tempting to spend two weeks on a Thai Island, at least someone in the family is likely to go stir crazy at the lack of variety.
We think three centres works best for families; combine a buzzing City with its temples and night markets, adventure in peaceful hill country and relaxation on a tropical beach. It is also worth bearing in mind that the excellent low-cost flights make it super simple to combine Thailand with glorious IndoChinese gems such as Loas's Luang Prabang and the incredible temples of Angkor Wat.
Whilst you can do Thailand on a shoe string if you are willing to put up with basic traveller accommodation, we think it is best to ensure you don't hit any duds and invest in some of the superb boutique accommodation on offer especially given you have the kids in tow. And, of course, don't forget leave enough time to grab a massage and sink a Beer Chiang whilst swinging on a hammock, this is Thailand after all.
