EnquireMchanga beach lodge is in the Kwengwa area of Zanzibar, on the northwest coast. A pleasant, affordable lodge, Mchanga enjoys a beautiful beachside location and seafront views.
This small and simple lodge set on a stretch of beautiful white sand, has a large restaurant, pool and bar area and friendly spa. In a position of seclusion and serenity this is an ideal retreat for those looking to unwind after a safari or simply get away from the daily grind.
With the focus being on relaxing, there are not many activities available at the hotel itself. However, guests can borrow both snorkelling equipment and bikes from the hotel during their stay and a volleyball net is erected on the beach. Tours and excursions around the island can be organised including to some popular diving spots.
An intimate lodge, Mchanga has only 10 rooms split into sea and garden view. Basic, but homely and clean, the rooms are large with white washed walls and brilliant views. All the rooms have private terraces and ensuite toilet and bathrooms, although the garden rooms are slightly larger to make up for the slightly less impressive views.
Mchanga Beach lodge welcomes children over the age of eight, however there are no organised programmes to keep children entertained. Nevertheless, there is both an adults and a kid’s pool and the lovely beach that should be enough to keep older, more mature children occupied for the duration of your stay. Families of up to four can be accommodated together and babysitting services can also be organised on request.
This is an unpretentious lodge that provides good value and a stunning setting. For those looking for a pristine beach holiday at a reasonable price, this is an excellent choice.
We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!
The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.
I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.
The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.
All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).
From my seven-year-old son:
I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.
In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths. Will be a trip we remember forever
