Overview

Okutala Etosha Lodge occupies a wonderful hillside location in the far north of Namibia, a short drive from Etosha National Park. This warm and friendly property boasts picturesque views of the surrounding area and its open, unspoiled landscapes and sits about 25 km away from the national park’s southern Anderson’s Gate. The lodge is completely submerged in nature, with animals sometimes passing through camp. There are some great on site facilities including a hide, a pool and a watering hole along with plenty of activities in and around the national park.

There are 21 comfy and spacious rooms at the lodge. Rooms are grouped into three categories: single rooms, double rooms and the larger family rooms. All accommodation options are air conditioned and have mosquito nets already fitted, along with a private shaded viewing deck and coffee making facilities. Bathrooms are en-suite and all have a shower, with some including a bathtub as well. The rooms are well spaced apart throughout the lodge’s grounds.

There is plenty to explore in Etosha National Park and the surrounding area. Guided hiking tours and cycling safaris are possible, as well as feeding sessions providing visitors with the rare opportunity to feed animals such as hyenas, leopards and elephants. The superb guided game drives into Etosha National Park offer the chance to spot an array of animals, some of the most commonly seen include southern white rhinoceroses, meerkats, African bush elephants and aardvarks. Endangered species tours and sundowner drives are also a popular choice.

Back at base, stargazing is a popular activity, as is exploring the lodge’s very own aviary, which is home to many colourful bird species. The property also has its own sprawling, 24,000 hectare farm - scenic drives through the farm are offered, with some focusing on the farm’s wildlife and others on its abundant plant life.

On-site facilities include an expansive public viewing deck overlooking a watering hole, and a photographic hide for those looking to get up-close photos of the animals that gather there. There’s also a swimming pool, a curio shop and a restaurant with a bar, where freshly prepared meals and refreshing drinks are served.

The lodge prides itself on being family friendly. Children are very welcome to stay here and families are encouraged to bring along their young ones, with many of the lodge’s activities and tours suitable for people of all ages. The family rooms accommodate 2 adults sharing with a maximum of 3 children under 12 years of age and comprise 2 separate, adjacent rooms with an inter-connecting door and shared bathroom. While it is rare for animals to approach humans, parents are reminded to keep their children under constant adult supervision.

  • Trip was great and all the arrangements were excellent so thank you for all the help!

Drivers and transfers were all good - on time and very good service on each trip.

Accommodation was lovely - Douar Samra was amazing (weather could have been better but lovely regardless). Riad in Marrakesh was also great!

All in all a great trip and we loved the variety of the mountains, Marrakesh and the coast.

    Thanks you once again!

  • I was also just about to email you to thank you and the team for arranging yet again, another wonderful experience.

Mount Kenya was spectacular and wild - I think I prefer it to Kili in many ways. The entire support team was professional, friendly and all round fantastic in making sure that we were safe, well fed and well looked after. In particular, we would commend Peter the guide as well as Paul one of the porters who doubled-up as his deputy on summit day. Our route was often shrouded in mist and rain that rapidly gathered in the valleys and moorlands, and we were very impressed at how Peter managed to navigate us safely through all of that notwithstanding. In addition, we loved learning about the history of Mount Kenya from him in the evenings. And ofcourse, I was blown away by the lovely birthday surprise at the end complete with balloons and a delicious cake that had journeyed with us from day 1. One thing we might recommend because of the sudden change in weather (it would sometimes get extremely cold and wet) is for the equipment list to be a little bit more detailed in terms of its recommendations e.g. layers to be moisture-wicking, walking boots be waterproof, doubling up on socks to avoid blisters etc.

El Karama is a beautiful conservancy and the lodge a true labour of love. Great hospitality in a relaxed environment. Delicious, fresh food. We enjoyed the drives, even if we didn't see much wildlife as the heavens opened on us for the last two outings. However, since it was very much geared towards families, I am not sure if I would stay again without kids. That said, I think it was perfect for a 3d/2n stay post mountain, and a much better choice than flying to the masai mara given the limited time we had.

Our transits were smooth. Samuel the driver was always on time, drove safely and kept the vehicle clean.

So it was a brilliant experience and one which I certainly will cherish for some time to come. It was great to work with you for a third time, and I certainly hope it won't be the last

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”
