Overview

Etendeka Mountain Camp is a rustic, eco-friendly bush camp located in a large private conservancy within the stunning Etendeka lava flows of Northern Damaraland, northwest Namibia. This remote wilderness is home to a diverse range of species, including mountain zebra, giraffe, oryx and springbok as well as the more elusive lion, black rhino and desert elephant.

The main camp areas include a sheltered swimming pool and a spacious, open-fronted lounge constructed from local stone. Wi-fi and electrical charging points are available, along with a selection of nature books. Communal meals are served at shared tables and there’s a small bar. Mealtimes are laid back and friendly; guests relax with sundowners and enjoy buffet-style feasts prepared on open fires. With its strong conservation ethos and extensive use of solar power, Etendeka is highly ranked in the Namibian Eco-awards.

Activities include safari walks and game drives with Etendeka’s extremely knowledgeable guides. The area is geologically stunning, with red basalt mountains, and quartz and agate-littered terrain. Excursions further afield include Crystal Mountain, famed for its semiprecious stones, and visits to indigenous tribes in Otjitheka. Minimal light and air pollution allow perfect conditions for evening star gazing. The camp is unfenced and animals roam freely through, allowing guests a thrilling glimpse of wildlife up-close.

The basic but comfortable accommodation comprises 10 ensuite Meru-style tents, each sleeping a maximum of two. The tents are simply furnished with double or twin beds, table and chairs, reading lamp and clothes rail. Bathrooms include electric lighting, flush toilets, washbasin with hot and cold running water and a traditional open-air bucket shower.

To limit vehicles on the concession, guests can self-drive to a pick up point 18km from camp. Alternatively there is an airstrip approximately 5km from the camp for private air charters.

Children of eight years and over are welcome, with discounted rates for under 12s. As there is no child-specific program, Etendeka will suit older children who enjoy wildlife, exploration, and walking activities. Due to the unfenced nature of the camp, parents are reminded they must supervise their children at all times.

Etendeka Mountain Camp offers an authentic wilderness experience amidst spectacular scenery and wildlife, and will suit travellers seeking peace and relaxation off the beaten track.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever
