Overview

Mowani Mountain Camp is a sophisticated lodge nestled between a collection of giant boulders in the heart of the Twyfelfontein area, in the Western area of Namibia. In a prime position with fantastic views and a great sundowner spot, this property is perfect for couples and families alike.

A sister camp to near by Camp Kipwe, and run to the same high standard, this innovative property enjoys a variety of habitats and dramatic natural landscapes. The camp is made up of unusual, thatched dome structures that house a comfortable lounge and dining area as well as a gift shop and lead to a swimming pool, tucked away behind more boulders.

In this harsh and sparse environment, a number of species have adapted to the desert like conditions. Twice daily game drives search for the elusive desert adapted elephant as well as more common wildlife such as giraffe, baboon, springbok and jackal. Nature walks are popular in the immediate area of the lodge but more serious hikes could also be organised with the guides if you are keen. Nearby Twyfelfontein offers some unique and impressive rock art as well as balooning trips and some good cultural trips can be made to local villages.

The accommodation is split into thirteen ensuite rooms and two private suites. Once again, the structures are thatched domes, and they cleverly blend into the natural landscape whilst still being architecturally impressive. All the rooms are spacious with open views across the valley or the hilltops depending on the room type. Traditionally furnished with African ornaments and materials, all the rooms are ensuite and have private terraces from which to enjoy the fabulous views. Both the mini suite and the suite are air conditioned and have open air decks, outdoor and indoor bathrooms and comfortable lounges. Dinner can be served on the balcony of the suite making it a good choice for honeymooners.

There is no minimum age for children at Mowani Mountain which is unusual and a big plus for families with younger children. However, there are no specific programmes for children and the landscape could be potentially hazardous, so close parental supervision will be needed. The pleasant pool area and private terraces of the accommodation are places children could enjoy during the day.

Mowani Mountain Camp is a good quality lodge with access to some good game and unusual rock art. Whilst stronger game can be found elsewhere, this is a strong contender in the Damaraland area and could be ideal for families with older, more responsible children, or those with very young children that are less interested in an intense safari holiday.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever
