Overview

Lake Burunge Tented Camp is located by the shore of Lake Burunge in the migratory corridor of Manyara and Tarangire, Northern Tanzania. It is a short 20-minute drive to Tarangire National Park with its areas of dense bush, long grasses, hills, huge baobab trees and abundant wildlife. The park is dominated by the valley of the Tarangire River which attracts large numbers of migrant animals during the dry months.

The characterful main building, with its thatched roof, provides a central lounge and bar/dining area built onto an elegant raised wooden deck with uninterrupted views of Lake Burunge. Animals such as zebra and elephant and spectacular birdlife can be seen from the veranda and in the evenings there’s a camp fire. There is mobile phone reception and internet access (at additional cost) and a good-sized, infinity swimming pool which is well-positioned for wildlife-viewing.

Activities include game-drives into the Tarangire National Park. Although there is no off-road driving permitted within the reserve, night drives are permitted in this area, as are walking safaris. Be aware that the camp’s location outside of the National Park can mean some longer journeys to reach the main viewing areas. Note that tstse flies can be a menace at certain times of year but it’s always possible to close vehicle windows during game-viewing to minimise irritation and nothing can really detract from the fantastic game viewing in the dry season. In particular, this is one of the best places in Tanzania to see elephants who congregate in huge numbers around the Tarangire River. A great variety of colourful birds are also to be seen, including the Paradise Whyder and Yellow-Collared Lovebirds, making this park a real draw for ornithologists. Lake Burunge Tented Camp is set in a large concession area dedicated to the conservation of the local Maasai people and cultural visits to their communities can be arranged.

There are a total of 30 rooms at the camp, 20 well-maintained tents plus 10 lodges. The tents are linked by walkways and have large twin or double-beds. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with built-in showers, mosquito nets and private verandas with views overlooking the Tarangire National Park and Lake Burunge where the zebra, flamingo and monkeys can be seen.

Although there is no particular provision for children, all ages are very welcome. Note, however, that the camp is not fenced and animals can wander by at close proximity. Whilst it is true that wildlife tends to stay away from humans and camps, parents will need to keep a close eye on children and not allow them to wander off or play without supervision.

Lake Burunge Tented Camp is fairly large in size but its location just outside the Tarangire National Park means that it offers peace and tranquillity even during the busy dry season. It is a pleasant and well-maintained camp offering a good level of comfort and a lovely place to relax amidst a busy safari schedule.

  • I was also just about to email you to thank you and the team for arranging yet again, another wonderful experience.

Mount Kenya was spectacular and wild - I think I prefer it to Kili in many ways. The entire support team was professional, friendly and all round fantastic in making sure that we were safe, well fed and well looked after. In particular, we would commend Peter the guide as well as Paul one of the porters who doubled-up as his deputy on summit day. Our route was often shrouded in mist and rain that rapidly gathered in the valleys and moorlands, and we were very impressed at how Peter managed to navigate us safely through all of that notwithstanding. In addition, we loved learning about the history of Mount Kenya from him in the evenings. And ofcourse, I was blown away by the lovely birthday surprise at the end complete with balloons and a delicious cake that had journeyed with us from day 1. One thing we might recommend because of the sudden change in weather (it would sometimes get extremely cold and wet) is for the equipment list to be a little bit more detailed in terms of its recommendations e.g. layers to be moisture-wicking, walking boots be waterproof, doubling up on socks to avoid blisters etc.

El Karama is a beautiful conservancy and the lodge a true labour of love. Great hospitality in a relaxed environment. Delicious, fresh food. We enjoyed the drives, even if we didn't see much wildlife as the heavens opened on us for the last two outings. However, since it was very much geared towards families, I am not sure if I would stay again without kids. That said, I think it was perfect for a 3d/2n stay post mountain, and a much better choice than flying to the masai mara given the limited time we had.

Our transits were smooth. Samuel the driver was always on time, drove safely and kept the vehicle clean.

So it was a brilliant experience and one which I certainly will cherish for some time to come. It was great to work with you for a third time, and I certainly hope it won't be the last

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”
