Overview

Ilala lodge is a boutique hotel in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The nearest hotel to the Falls at only a 14 minute walk, Illala provides a luxury stay with excellent connections to all the local attractions.

The main guest areas have a colonial feel to them and include a gorgeous outdoor dining area, two restaurants, (whose fare includes crocodile and ostrich meat) and a very pleasant pool area with open air cocktail bar.

As well as the customary visit to the falls, a variety of activities are available thanks to the great surroundings, from wildlife viewing to extreme sports. Morning and evening game drives are a great way to see the best of the wildlife in the National Park and elephant rides and lion walks can also be organised. For those looking for more adrenaline, bungee jumping, gorge swings, zip lining and white water rafting may be more your thing as well as helicopter rides and river cruises for the more sedate evenings.

The accommodation is split into 54 rooms and 2 deluxe suites making this a mid-size hotel that has been cleverly designed to feel much more intimate. The rooms are split across two floors with the upstairs rooms opening onto private balconies and the downstairs rooms with double French doors leading onto the gardens. The rooms are all tastefully furnished with an African ambiance and big, comfortable beds. All the rooms have large ensuite bathrooms with bathtubs and showers. The suites are located on the top floor with private balconies overlooking the grounds. An extra twin bed can be included to make this a great choice for families. Teemed with great views and wandering wildlife, the accommodation here is expertly done.

Children of all ages are welcome at Ilala Lodge as it is not an accommodation option specifically geared up for safaris. The accommodation can comfortably house families in either the suites or brand new ‘deluxe’ wing.

We recommend this property to guests for its excellent location and homely feel, despite being a hotel rather than a lodge. Plenty of activities and good staff add to the experience and ensure a charming stay at Ilala Lodge.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever
