Overview

Batonka Guest Lodge is a small, independent guesthouse in the town of Victoria Falls, northwest Zimbabwe. Built in a colonial style, this eco-friendly lodge is situated in a quiet, yet central, residential area, only 3km from the majestic Victoria Falls and with straightforward access to the town and its facilities. A great lower cost option, Batonka offers friendly, personalised service, a swimming pool and gift shop, and 22 well-appointed rooms with private verandas, all overlooking the property’s picturesque gardens.

The lodge’s guest areas include a reception area and a welcoming lounge with an open fireplace and comfy sofas. Breakfast, including the option of a full English, is served in the indoor dining room or alfresco on the spacious terrace, which has views of the pretty gardens and swimming pool. Home cooked lunches and dinners are available upon request. There is a small gift shop on site, selling Zimbabwean arts and crafts. The lodge employs eco-friendly initiatives, including solar heating, recycling and irrigation systems.

A wide range of activities is available locally, all of which can be booked via reception. A scenic helicopter tour (known as Flight of Angels) over Victoria Falls is a must for any visitor. Walking tours of the falls, river cruises, and canoeing are available, along with game drives, horse riding, and cultural visits to the nearby Chinotimba township, home to many of the area’s indigenous residents. Adrenalin seekers can test their nerve with bungee jumping, white water rafting, microlight excursions, and white knuckle zip wire rides over the falls. Note that activities are not included in the price of your stay.

Accommodation comprises 22 contemporary twin or double rooms, all with private verandas overlooking the lovely gardens. All have ensuite bathrooms with double basin, WC, and shower/ bath and shower. Each unit comes with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, TV and tea and coffee facilities.

Children are extremely welcome at the lodge. A number of interconnecting rooms are available, which are ideal for families.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever
