Overview

Nehimba Safari Lodge is a superb small tented camp in a wild and remote location in Hwange National Park, northwest Zimbabwe. This remote property sits in a private concession on the edge of mopane forest in an area brimming with wildlife. Nehimba offers an incredible and unique elephant experience literally on tap as large herd of elephant come to drink from the camp swimming pool most nights. Elephant also come to suck water out of the underground natural seeps. Nehimba would usually be used in combination with a camp in the Eastern Wild of Hwange which tends to offer better predator viewing opportunities.

Nehimba offers superb hosting and guiding along with nine well-appointed thatched tents, plus a restaurant, bar and swimming pool. It is an excellent midrange option for travellers seeking an exclusive and authentic safari experience in a secluded, game-rich location.

Nehimba is located a 4 ½ hour drive from Victoria Falls, within Hwange’s unspoilt, remote northern climes. With a diverse terrain spanning arid scrub, verdant woodland, and grassy plains, this vast region boasts excellent game viewing, particularly during the June – October dry season, when large numbers of elephant along with lion, leopard, buffalo, and zebra, are drawn to the surrounding waterholes.

The camp’s thatched main area is built on raised decking with super views over an adjacent waterhole frequented by wildlife. Guest areas include a communal dining area, a lounge and a library, plus a souvenir shop. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in the main area. Outside is a terrace and a refreshing swimming pool which is popular with the local elephants, who often choose to drink from the pool instead of the waterhole!

Activities are tailored to guest preferences and comprise game drives and guided walks with highly experienced, enthusiastic guides, along with night drives in the private concession where hyena, porcupine, civet, and the occasional nocturnal leopard can be glimpsed. Excursions include the Nehimba Seep, an ancient water source once used by San Bushmen and now frequented by elephants, and picnics at Mandavu Dam, a great game viewing location with prolific birdlife.

Accommodation at the lodge comprises nine spacious and elegantly furnished thatched tents constructed on teak decking, and generously spaced apart for privacy. Each tent contains a double or twin beds draped with mosquito nets, plus an ensuite bathroom with a bath and a wonderfully indulgent alfresco shower. Outside is a private veranda with great views of the waterhole. All units have hot and cold running water, electricity by generator, ceiling fans, and hot drink facilities. A complimentary daily laundry service is provided.

Children over seven years of age are extremely welcome in camp, and discounts are offered for guests under 13 who share with adults. Families with children under seven years may be accommodated at the manager’s sole discretion, subject to hiring a private vehicle for game drives. Nehimba offers two spacious family tents, each sleeping up to four guests, with a double and twin beds, an ensuite bathroom with outside shower, and a veranda ideal for wildlife watching. Note that the camp is unfenced and wild animals, including elephants, regularly roam through. Although it is unusual that wildlife would approach tents or people, parents are requested to supervise children at all times.

  • Trip was great and all the arrangements were excellent so thank you for all the help!

Drivers and transfers were all good - on time and very good service on each trip.

Accommodation was lovely - Douar Samra was amazing (weather could have been better but lovely regardless). Riad in Marrakesh was also great!

All in all a great trip and we loved the variety of the mountains, Marrakesh and the coast.

    Thanks you once again!

  • I was also just about to email you to thank you and the team for arranging yet again, another wonderful experience.

Mount Kenya was spectacular and wild - I think I prefer it to Kili in many ways. The entire support team was professional, friendly and all round fantastic in making sure that we were safe, well fed and well looked after. In particular, we would commend Peter the guide as well as Paul one of the porters who doubled-up as his deputy on summit day. Our route was often shrouded in mist and rain that rapidly gathered in the valleys and moorlands, and we were very impressed at how Peter managed to navigate us safely through all of that notwithstanding. In addition, we loved learning about the history of Mount Kenya from him in the evenings. And ofcourse, I was blown away by the lovely birthday surprise at the end complete with balloons and a delicious cake that had journeyed with us from day 1. One thing we might recommend because of the sudden change in weather (it would sometimes get extremely cold and wet) is for the equipment list to be a little bit more detailed in terms of its recommendations e.g. layers to be moisture-wicking, walking boots be waterproof, doubling up on socks to avoid blisters etc.

El Karama is a beautiful conservancy and the lodge a true labour of love. Great hospitality in a relaxed environment. Delicious, fresh food. We enjoyed the drives, even if we didn't see much wildlife as the heavens opened on us for the last two outings. However, since it was very much geared towards families, I am not sure if I would stay again without kids. That said, I think it was perfect for a 3d/2n stay post mountain, and a much better choice than flying to the masai mara given the limited time we had.

Our transits were smooth. Samuel the driver was always on time, drove safely and kept the vehicle clean.

So it was a brilliant experience and one which I certainly will cherish for some time to come. It was great to work with you for a third time, and I certainly hope it won't be the last

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”
