Overview

Zambezi Sands is an upmarket tented safari camp in Zambezi National Park, northwest Zimbabwe. This stylish, intimate camp sits in a secluded spot on the banks of the Zambezi River, just over an hour’s drive from the iconic Victoria Falls. The camp provides top notch accommodation in just 10 spacious Bedouin style tents, each with their own private plunge pool and sun deck. Game drives, guided walks, and river based activities are on offer with enthusiastic, experienced guides. Zambezi Sands will appeal to travellers with a higher budget seeking an exclusive and very comfortable safari experience, away from the crowds.

The camp is constructed on raised decking with tranquil river views. Guest areas include a dining room with an outdoor terrace offering flexibility for indoor and alfresco communal meals, and a comfortable lounge and bar area. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in the main areas. There's also a fire pit with seating, a great spot for a sundowner and for observing the resident wildlife which includes hippo, elephant, crocodile, zebra, bushbuck, and an abundance of birds including the Lanner falcon and Verreaux eagle.

Activities include morning and afternoon game drives with highly experienced guides, plus the option of full day game drives. Guided walks are available in the mornings, to avoid the heat of the day. River based activities include guided canoeing on the Zambezi and guided fishing. The river is home to numerous species, including the notorious Tiger fish. An hour’s drive downstream is the mighty Victoria Falls, where helicopter tours, river cruises and adrenalin-pumping water activities are all available.

Accommodation comprises 10 elegant Bedouin style tents, spaced out along the riverbank and edged by trees, to maximise privacy. Each tent offers plenty of space and has either a double or twin beds draped with mosquito nets, a comfortable lounge area with panoramic river views, and an ensuite bathroom with bath, WC, and basin, plus a wonderfully indulgent alfresco shower. All units have ceiling fans, a minibar, and hot drink facilities and a complimentary daily laundry service is provided. Outside is a generous veranda with a private plunge pool and lovely views of the Zambezi, perfect for sunbathing and wildlife watching.

Children over the age of seven are warmly welcome in camp. Discounts are offered for guests under 13 years when sharing with an adult, and each tent sleeps up to two children and one adult. The camp offers a dedicated family unit consisting of two interconnecting tents, ideal for larger groups. Families with children under seven may be accommodated at the management’s sole discretion - this is subject to hiring a separate vehicle for game drives, at additional cost. Note that Zambezi Sands is an unfenced camp, adjacent to the Zambezi River. In light of the surrounding wildlife and waterside location, children should be supervised at all times.

  • I was also just about to email you to thank you and the team for arranging yet again, another wonderful experience.

Mount Kenya was spectacular and wild - I think I prefer it to Kili in many ways. The entire support team was professional, friendly and all round fantastic in making sure that we were safe, well fed and well looked after. In particular, we would commend Peter the guide as well as Paul one of the porters who doubled-up as his deputy on summit day. Our route was often shrouded in mist and rain that rapidly gathered in the valleys and moorlands, and we were very impressed at how Peter managed to navigate us safely through all of that notwithstanding. In addition, we loved learning about the history of Mount Kenya from him in the evenings. And ofcourse, I was blown away by the lovely birthday surprise at the end complete with balloons and a delicious cake that had journeyed with us from day 1. One thing we might recommend because of the sudden change in weather (it would sometimes get extremely cold and wet) is for the equipment list to be a little bit more detailed in terms of its recommendations e.g. layers to be moisture-wicking, walking boots be waterproof, doubling up on socks to avoid blisters etc.

El Karama is a beautiful conservancy and the lodge a true labour of love. Great hospitality in a relaxed environment. Delicious, fresh food. We enjoyed the drives, even if we didn't see much wildlife as the heavens opened on us for the last two outings. However, since it was very much geared towards families, I am not sure if I would stay again without kids. That said, I think it was perfect for a 3d/2n stay post mountain, and a much better choice than flying to the masai mara given the limited time we had.

Our transits were smooth. Samuel the driver was always on time, drove safely and kept the vehicle clean.

So it was a brilliant experience and one which I certainly will cherish for some time to come. It was great to work with you for a third time, and I certainly hope it won't be the last

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”
