Overview

The remote, supremely comfortable Tau Game Lodge is located in the far north of South Africa within the Groot Marico area of the Madikwe Game Reserve, the fourth largest game reserve in the country. The area is completely free from malaria and wild animals can frequently be seen gathering at the natural watering hole which the property overlooks. Recent renovations have significantly improved the standard of accommodation at the lodge, which first opened its doors to visitors back in 1995.

Up to sixty guests can be accommodated in thirty chalets which are fairly well spread out and set out in a U-shape formation. All chalets look out onto the watering hole and have a wooden deck area so that guests can spot animals in their natural habitats from the comfort of their own accommodation. Chalets are equipped with air conditioning and a ceiling fan, along with amenities such as tea and coffee making facilities, mosquito nets and a minibar. There are four accommodation options to choose from. Standard chalets sleep two adults, while Deluxe chalets offer twice the amount of space and can sleep two adults plus two children. The Family Unit is made up of two interconnecting Standard chalets, while the Family Suite is made up of two Deluxe chalets connected by a shared lounge area.

The main reason to visit the lodge is to head out on safari and discover the Madikwe Game Reserve’s diverse wildlife and astounding landscapes. Game drives take place twice daily, once in the early morning and once in the afternoon and it’s possible to view an array of animals, including the Big 5 – in fact, there are over sixty mammal species and more than three hundred bird species to be found here. When not out on safari, there’s a lovely infinity pool, a bar, a spa and a game-viewing lounge to relax in.

Families are warmly welcome and there’s a designated kids club called Cubz Club offering arts and crafts, special child-friendly game drives and treasure hunts. A babysitting service is available. Note that children aged 5 and below are not permitted to join safaris and parents are reminded to ensure that youngsters remain under constant adult supervision.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
