Itinerary

Overview

Your holiday starts off in marvellous Cape Town. Sat between the Southern Ocean and Table Mountain, Cape Town brings together atmospheric neighbourhoods, a glitzy waterfront, the wild Cape Point and some seriously good vineyards. In Cape Town, we include a private guided Peninsula tour and a private guided winelands tour. Every tour is tailored to your interests by our fabulous local guides who pride themselves on knowing the best hidden spots, eateries and cafes in the Cape offering a genuine insider’s take on Cape Town. We also leave a free day to explore, with options to visit Robben Island, enjoy a guided Table Mountain Hike, mountain biking or cycle tour of the City.

From Cape Town, it is a 5 hours’ drive to the Garden Route area. Nestled between Mountains and Coast, we recommend the wonderful Hog Hollow in the Crags area outside Plettenberg Bay. This is a lovely base from which to explore the local beaches, Tsitsikamma National Park and superb local attractions.

From the Crags, it is a short drive to George Airport, where you will leave your hire car behind and fly to the Kruger. The private conservancies in the Kruger region offer some of the finest safari and wildlife viewing in Africa and Sabi Sands has a reputation as one of the best. Nottens Bush Camp is one of our favourite camps in Sabi - well priced, superb location, lovely atmosphere and striking just the right note between indulgence and reasonable value.

This is a tailor-made itinerary, and can be customized for different lengths of stay, additional stops in the Cape and Garden Route areas. There are also many wonderful upgrade options to the suggested accommodation detailed here. We usually arrange self-drive in the Cape and Garden Route area, but can organise transfers and / or domestic flights if preferred.

FULL ITINERARY

DAY 1: ARRIVE CAPE TOWN
Accommodation: Welgelegen Guest House
Meals Included: n/a
Transport: Car Hire
Day Notes: On arrival, collect your hire car and drive to your accommodation. Afternoon at leisure to perhaps head up Table Mountain if it is a clear day or explore the V&A Waterfront

DAY 2: CAPE TOWN
Accommodation: Welgelegen Guest House
Meals Included: Breakfast
Transport: Private full day tour
Day Notes: Full day guided Cape Peninsula Tour. The drive to Cape Point route is one of the most magnificent drives in the world, passing the coast with a backdrop of stunning mountains. Don't miss the chance to stop at Boulders Beach along the way and swim with the colony of penguins, penguins, before continuing down to the wild and windy Cape Point itself where you can visit the old lighthouse and go for a bracing walk. If you have time on the way back, we recommend stopping at Olifantsbos Beach, a wild and windswept sandy and rocky beach with several well marked walking trails. This is a good location for spotting Eland, Bontebok and Zebra which tend to congregate in this area.

DAY 3: CAPE TOWN
Accommodation: Welgelegen Guest House
Meals Included: Breakfast
Transport: Private full day tour
Day Notes: Full day guided Cape Winelands Tour. Visit vineyards and artisanal producers in the company of your guide, a passionate foodie and local resident. You can get stuck into some fine wines and great food in incredibly beautiful surroundings. For our family visitors, we have picked out those with space for the kids to run around; from the jungle gym and famous hot chocolate at Warwick Estate to the gorgeous gardens and fruit orchards (where the children can help themselves to fruit) at Babylonstoren.

DAY 4: CAPE TOWN
Accommodation: Welgelegen Guest House
Meals Included: Breakfast
Transport: Car Hire
Day Notes: Day at leisure to perhaps take the Robben Island ferry from the V&A Waterfront or we can arrange a guided hike up Table Mountain

DAY 5: TRAVEL TO GARDEN ROUTE AREA
Accommodation: Hog Hollow
Meals Included: Breakfast
Transport: Car Hire
Day Notes: The drive from Cape Town will take about 6 hours. The garden route covers a large stretch of coast between the Western Cape and Port Elizabeth. Where once visitors headed without thinking for Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, it makes more sense nowadays to base yourself at one of the superior inland lodges and use it as a base to explore from. It is worth noting that as with the Cape in general, beaches are not your regular sun-bather & cocktail variety, think beach-combing, rock pools and surf. The area is the perfect base for exploring Tsitsikamma National Park and heading to one of the superb visitor attractions such as the Storms River Canopy Tour, Monkeyland or Knysna Elephant Park.

DAY 6: GARDEN ROUTE
Accommodation: Hog Hollow
Meals Included: Breakfast
Transport: Car Hire
Day Notes: Tsitsikamma National Park is the indisputable gem of the Garden Route, a beautiful 80km stretch of wild coast and lush forest. A great way to experience the Park is on Storms River waterfall trail a 2-3 hour scramble along the Coast from the Storms River Rest Camp along the first section of the world famous Otter Trail. Like all the best family walks, the rocky boulder strewn path creates enough of a challenge to keep children interested. The views of the Ocean are magnificent and sightings of dolphins playing in the surf are fairly common on this stretch of Coast. The target of the walk is a waterfall crashing into a swimmable tidal pool. Also in the Storms River area is the highly renowned and award winning Storms River Canopy Tour in the magnificent Tsitsikamma indigenous rainforest. One of the best Canopy tours in the world, platforms are built around giant yellow wood trees that are up to 700 years old. You glide slowly between the platforms suspended from steel cables. The local guides are a wealth of knowledge on the forest ecosystem and the tour is a pioneering example of local community involvement. For those with a taste for adventure but without out a head for heights, the 2 hours Storms River kayak & lilt adventure is also highly recommended. Starting in the open ocean, you paddle into the opening of the Storms River and upstream through the magnificent gorge surrounded by towering cliffs, at the low water point, kayaks are exchanged for lilos and you gently make your way further up-stream and float back. There is only time for two of the three options in the day, but there is nothing stopping you returning the next day for more.

DAY 7: GARDEN ROUTE
Accommodation: Hog Hollow
Meals Included: Breakfast
Transport: Car Hire
Day Notes: Today perhaps head up for the day to explore Oudtshoorn, visiting the Cango Caves and Ostrich farms

DAY 8: GARDEN ROUTE
Accommodation: Hog Hollow
Meals Included: Breakfast
Transport: Car Hire
Day Notes: Explore the Garden Route, the nearby visitor attractions of Monkeyland and Knysna Elephant Park are highly rated, but you might just want to take it easy, heading to one of the beaches in the area or enjoying the swimming pool and a gentle walking trail from your accommodation

DAY 9: GREATER KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
Accommodation: Nottens Bush Camp
Meals Included: Breakfast, dinner and scheduled shared afternoon game drive
Transport: Car Hire & Kruger road transfer
Day Notes: Drive to George Airport and return hire car. From George, fly via Johannesburg to the Kruger, where you will be met and transferred to your safari lodge. Subject to flight times, enjoy an afternoon game drive and dinner at the lodge

DAY 10: GREATER KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
Accommodation: Nottens Bush Camp
Meals Included: All meals and scheduled shared AM & PM game drives
Transport: n/a
Day Notes: our day on safari generally starts with an early morning rise for the departure of your game drive, during your drive you will stop for drinks and snacks. You then return to the lodge for a hearty full English breakfast and then enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. A light lunch is served. Late afternoon meet for game drive, again stopping en route for refreshments.

DAY 11: GREATER KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
Accommodation: Nottens Bush Camp
Meals Included: All meals and scheduled shared AM & PM game drives
Transport: n/a
Day Notes: On safari

DAY 12: DEPART
Accommodation: n/a

Transport: Road transfer to local airport
Day Notes: Transfer to Kruger Mpumalanga Airport for your onward flight

  • Everything was fab, I especially loved Tuningi such a special place and my son got to see his favourite animal the cheetah (after a bit of time hunting about on foot!). Mauritius is lovely we saw quite a bit of the island in the end.

  • We had a wonderful trip to Morocco. What a fascinating country. Thank you so much for all of your help making things smooth and less stressful!

Here are a few things we wanted to pass on:

Dar Housnia was absolutely delightful. It was like an entire wing of a house to ourselves with perfect Moroccan decor. The private area where we ate was so cute, the riad staff so accommodating. I loved waking in the cozy space with our family and hearing both call to prayer as well as roosters. Just perfect.

I was a little unclear how to ask what time we were being picked up etc, but your office promptly replied to my emails - even on weekends- when we had these questions about transport times. Once, we met our guide in Imlil these details we not problematic as our guide “Abraham” totally took care of us. Abraham was awesome. You should definitely request him again in the future. He was young (29)and energetic. He had a ton of hiking experience in Imlil as he was from there. He also seemed to know everything else about morocco, the desert, the culture, etc, etc. He was approachable, kind, patient, great with our kids and answered SO MANY of our questions.

The hike was lovely - after rain the day prior in Marrakech - there was snow in the mountains. It was gorgeous. We may have been up for a longer hike up Mt Taboukel if I had known this was a realistic option for families ( I thought from reading that it was too technical for us). Yet not sure we had enough days for all these things always since getting in the desert was a priority.

The mountain house, Dar adar, was just as described… very basic. The wifi was broken (which was a nice break when you have pre-teens addicted to phones, plus my husband called no wifi an amenity to not be available by email for his work!)). There was no heat and the fireplace helped a tad - but was so very cold in the rooms. My husband loved the rustic space, I may have gone up one step in niceness of mountain accommodation if I had to do it over again. Yet, meeting the other families in this Dar Adar (including another Tourdust family from England) made this house very memorable.

We were then joined by our driver for the next several days, Jamal. What a fun guy and a perfect driver. He could joke with my kids, he had a fun smile, and he had worked with Abraham before so they were a great team. The drive to desert was long as I knew it would be. It was nice to have the stop on way there near Ait Ben Haddu. The drive back from desert was long. It was more near 10 hours of driving (plus 1 hour at lunch = 11 hours) but I wouldn’t have made any different choices.

The luxury desert camp was far and away the highlight of our trip. The tents were adorable, I was sufficiently warm even at night inside the tent. We loved the camel riding, the ATV vehicles at a nearby camp, sunsets on the dunes, music around the camp fire, meals with others at the camp and more.

The last night was at Riad Jona. This was so very very lovely. The food was amazing - such a good idea to eat here after our long drive back to Marrakech. They had a small dining pool plus a hot tub which was delightful. It was almost more of a boutique hotel as it had several rooms.

  • The trip was amazing everything was better than we could have imagined.
There was a moment climbing the mount Kenya where my wife accused me of tricking her into doing this (half kidding) as some of the nights got pretty cold, but we were dressed well and the sunrise at the peak was astonishing.
Safari was spectacular, Ben who was our main guide and driver was awesome! We saw everything excepts rhinos which were more of a hope than a reality. We also were able to watch a rock python eat a Thompson gazel live. It was one of the most interesting and unsettling things I have ever seen.
Just overall, so many moments that make you think wow or I can't believe I am here. Thank you for your help in getting everything set up. I don't believe I could have booked the trip without your help and guidance. It was an amazing way to start our marriage and truly the trip of a lifetime!
