Overview

Zebra River Lodge is a recently renovated farmhouse situated amidst stunning scenery in the Tsaris mountains, southern Namibia. Occupying its own canyon near Namib-Naukluft National Park, the lodge’s remote location alongside the Zebra River lends the property a secluded and peaceful feel. The surrounding area has a fascinating geological and palaeontological history, and there’s an abundance of wildlife to be discovered, including mountain zebra, antelope, klipspringers and kudu.

The lodge's recent modernisations have dramatically improved the elegance of the somewhat limited facilities available, allowing guests a higher standard of comfort whilst retaining the down-to-earth charm that the original exterior stonework affords. The fireplace and abundant soft furnishings make for a cosy and intimate lounge. Although the dining room may be somewhat less inviting, it is light and airy, and in the summer guests can eat on the veranda whilst enjoying spectacular views of the mountains. The surrounding gardens provide a serene setting for the fish pond and a good-sized pool.

The lodge offers a variety of rooms, ranging from the modern functionality of the standard rooms in the main body of the hotel, to the significantly more luxurious honeymoon suite. The standard rooms, each with their own en-suite bathroom, are situated off the communal veranda. The rock chalets are more private, and are more lavishly decorated with tasteful furnishings and beautiful, exposed stonework walls and floors which keep them nice and cool during the intense Namibian summers. Each chalet houses a large, circular shower room, and in one chalet the shower room extends to a fabulous walk-in bathroom cave, complete with bath. The honeymoon suite is the most sumptuous set of rooms, with exposed beams and an exclusive elevated position on the hillside above the rest of the lodge, offering fantastic views of the surrounding landscape.

The hotel’s breath-taking location is a huge draw for visitors, providing access to hiking trails through some of southern Namibia's most beautiful scenery. The area is of intense geological and palaeontological interest, yielding examples of some of the oldest fossils in the world. Geological drives can be arranged with the lodge, although the area is best explored on foot, with guided walks revealing vibrant bird-life. Wine tours can also be enjoyed on a neighbouring farm, and sundowner trips to a tranquil local spring increase guests' chances of seeing mammalian wildlife. The aim of the new floodlit waterhole is to attract more big game over time, but currently it must be said that sightings may be rarer than at other camps. The amazing Sossusvlei, a large white, salt and clay pan walled by dramatic red dunes, is a two-hour drive away, and provides excellent photography opportunities.

With the majority of the activities on offer being hikes and appreciation of natural beauty, beyond the pool, there is limited entertainment for children, although they are welcome and there are no age restrictions. Some bedrooms can be adapted to families with the addition of up to two single beds, and the recent property upgrade includes the promise of three family rooms, each comprising two twin bedrooms sharing a bathroom. Cots and child menus are available on request. As there is an unfenced pool and fish pond, adult supervision of children is strongly recommended at all times.

Zebra River lodge is a comfortable, mid-range option offering good value for travellers seeking a short, relaxing break in sensational natural surroundings.

  • Trip was great and all the arrangements were excellent so thank you for all the help!

Drivers and transfers were all good - on time and very good service on each trip.

Accommodation was lovely - Douar Samra was amazing (weather could have been better but lovely regardless). Riad in Marrakesh was also great!

All in all a great trip and we loved the variety of the mountains, Marrakesh and the coast.

    Thanks you once again!

  • I was also just about to email you to thank you and the team for arranging yet again, another wonderful experience.

Mount Kenya was spectacular and wild - I think I prefer it to Kili in many ways. The entire support team was professional, friendly and all round fantastic in making sure that we were safe, well fed and well looked after. In particular, we would commend Peter the guide as well as Paul one of the porters who doubled-up as his deputy on summit day. Our route was often shrouded in mist and rain that rapidly gathered in the valleys and moorlands, and we were very impressed at how Peter managed to navigate us safely through all of that notwithstanding. In addition, we loved learning about the history of Mount Kenya from him in the evenings. And ofcourse, I was blown away by the lovely birthday surprise at the end complete with balloons and a delicious cake that had journeyed with us from day 1. One thing we might recommend because of the sudden change in weather (it would sometimes get extremely cold and wet) is for the equipment list to be a little bit more detailed in terms of its recommendations e.g. layers to be moisture-wicking, walking boots be waterproof, doubling up on socks to avoid blisters etc.

El Karama is a beautiful conservancy and the lodge a true labour of love. Great hospitality in a relaxed environment. Delicious, fresh food. We enjoyed the drives, even if we didn't see much wildlife as the heavens opened on us for the last two outings. However, since it was very much geared towards families, I am not sure if I would stay again without kids. That said, I think it was perfect for a 3d/2n stay post mountain, and a much better choice than flying to the masai mara given the limited time we had.

Our transits were smooth. Samuel the driver was always on time, drove safely and kept the vehicle clean.

So it was a brilliant experience and one which I certainly will cherish for some time to come. It was great to work with you for a third time, and I certainly hope it won't be the last

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”
