EnquireAzura Selous is a luxurious tented camp set on the banks of the Great Ruaha River in a particularly remote part of the Selous Game Reserve, Southern Tanzania. Accessible only by air, the surrounding wilderness is breath-taking, with rivers, lakes, forests and vast plains to explore, and a variety of animals to track including hippo, buffalo, wild dogs and some of Africa’s largest populations of lions.
The main areas comprise a lounge and dining room with a fresh, modern feel. The pretty infinity pool has expansive decking overlooking the tranquil river rapids. While mobile reception is intermittent, the WiFi signal is good. The camp belongs to the luxurious Azura Retreats portfolio and prides itself on its varied dining experiences, with food served at individual tables in the dining area or privately in guest suites. Bush picnics, riverside dinners, and communal candle-lit bush dinners are also offered.
The accommodation comprises twelve large, tented suites with thatched rooves and stone floors to keep them cool in hotter months. Each room is equipped with fans and air-conditioning (evenings only). Every suite has a bedroom with king-size bed, and a separate dressing room leading to an en-suite stone bathroom with flushing toilet, indoor and outdoor showers, and twin sinks with views of the river. All suites have a large viewing veranda and private plunge pool.
Activities include game drives, guided walks, fishing, boating (water-level permitting), spa treatments, and the birdlife is wonderful. Although wildlife in this secluded part of the reserve may not be the most intense, sightings in such an exclusive and untouched location are a humbling experience, and a real treat.
Azura Selous welcomes children aged 6 and over, although in common with many camps across the Selous Game Reserve, only those aged 16 plus are able to participate in nature walks outside camp. Extra beds can be added to any of the tented ‘villas’ to accommodate families of up to four. For safety reasons, guards accompany guests to tents at night and all under 16s must share a room with parents. Azura is the only camp in the Selous with a dedicated children’s programme, including fishing by the lodge, plaster-casting and guided walks around camp, plus family activities can be booked on an exclusive basis and meal times are flexible. Given the camp’s wild location and the surrounding river and private pools, parents must keep children under close supervision at all times.
Azura Selous offers guests a unique, tranquil and authentic safari experience with all the trimmings, in a beautiful area well off the beaten track.
We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!
The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.
I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.
The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.
All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).
From my seven-year-old son:
I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.
In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths. Will be a trip we remember forever
