Overview

A veritable treasure-house with a highly unique look, Canyon Roadhouse is more ‘roadhouse’ than it is ‘canyon’. Its unusual style is a breathe of fresh air and a stand-out icon in the area, offering fantastic mountain-views as well as a short trip to Fish River Canyon in Namibia.

Situated on the privately-owned Gondwana Canyon Park, Canyon Lodge provides a great base from which to go out and explore Fish River Canyon. As with its sister lodges, Canyon Roadhouse offers guests the chance to go on unguided morning hikes, guided sunset walks, and take Canyon and scenic drives. There is a plethora of game here to spot, big and small, but knowledge of the area is often required to get the best sightings. Whilst this is not the place to come for bird-spotting (with only 60 species of bird living here), the majestic black eagle is one local bird to watch out for. There are also guided excursions to the canyon viewpoints, 3-4 day superlative canyon trail hikes, and 4x4 drives through the so-called ‘Wildebeest Route’ towards Canyon Lodge and Canyon Village to view zebra and wildebeest on the grassy plains.

This lodge is smaller and slightly further away from Fish River Canyon than its two sister camps, Canyon Lodge and Canyon Village. Although its quirkiness is often what attracts most visitors, particularly families, to drop by (tables at the restaurant are in-between car cabs that double-up as fireplaces!).

Guest accommodation consists of 22 rooms. 19 of the rooms are twin rooms, and one is a triple. Each room is fitted with en-suite facilities and has its own private veranda.

The main lodge has a communal swimming pool, restaurant and bar, a campsite, and a terrace where guests can enjoy the local specialty, Amarula cheesecake, as well as the ‘best’ cappuccino for miles. Positioned next to a hill, the lodge offers great views of the surrounding area: watching the sun set behind the Holoog Mountain over the Gondwana Canyon Park is very special.

Children of all ages are welcome, and families are especially encouraged to visit. There are 2 family rooms. The lodge has its own American-style fuel station, too. Previous guests are quick to joke that Canyon Roadhouse is the place to fill up on fuel and smiles.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever
