Overview

Settled in the Klein Aus Vista, Namibia, Desert Horse Inn strikes the perfect balance between homeliness and attraction, evoking a sense of the Western-style living usually seen on film. Its proximity to culturally interesting towns, as well as its access to unique areas of the reserve under the Aus Mountains, makes the Inn an ideal base from which to walk, bike, or drive through the surrounding scenic landscapes.

Guest accommodation consists of 30 rooms – 24 Twin, 3 Triple, and 3 Four-bed – spread across rolling plains. Each rooms features en-suite facilities and provides a good view of the reserve. There are also four rooms in the Farmhouse, all of which share an outside sitting area.

The main lodge – a great wooden structure overlooking the reserve – houses most of the main facilities at the camp. There is a spacious lounge with a fireplace, restaurant and bar, with a seating area upstairs, as well as an outside deck where guests can eat, drink, and enjoy the views as wild horse gallop past.

Like its sister lodge, Eagle’s Nest Chalets, the Inn provides a great spot from which to explore Luderitz, a nearby coastal town, Kolamskop, an abandoned diamond settlement, or the rich wildlife found in the surrounding reserve. In addition to on-site game drives through Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park, there are opportunities for guests to participate in self-guided walks, sundowner drives, horse riding, and mountain biking.

Whilst children of all ages are welcome, there are no rollaway beds or cribs available. Therefore, the camp is best suited to older children with the maturity to enjoy all the activities on offer.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever
