Boschendal Farm is a 300 year old wine estate within the verdant Drakenstein Valley in South Africa’s Western Cape. An hour’s drive from Cape Town and only 15 minutes from the Cape Winelands towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, this historic farmstead enjoys an idyllic location, framed by the stunning Drakenstein and Simonsberg mountain ranges. Boasting a choice of beautifully restored, self-catering cottages with swimming pools, several dining options, and numerous onsite activities within its 2,000 hectare estate, Boschendal offers a relaxing and tranquil retreat.

The farm’s renowned Werf Restaurant is situated in the original werf (manor house). Open Wednesday to Saturday, menus feature locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. The farm shop and deli offer daily breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, and fresh farm produce is available, along with a food basket delivery service.

Activities include trout fishing, swimming in crystal clear streams, plus cycling and hiking through orchards, forests, and the distinctive mountain heathlands or ‘fynbos’ unique to this region. Guided silver mine tours take guests through a network of historical tunnels and caves. Beauty treatments are available at the farm’s spa, and wine enthusiasts can enjoy onsite wine tasting, vineyard and cellar tours, and visit the nearby Cape Wineland towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

Accommodation comprises several authentic, colonial style cottages spread across the estate, all tastefully restored with a blend of traditional and contemporary decor. Each cottage has Wi-Fi and satellite TV.

A short walk from the werf, Clarence Cottage sleeps four guests in two double or twin bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a generous lounge with an open fire, and air conditioning. Outside is a lovely private garden. Guests share access to a swimming pool by the Orchard Cottages.

Werf Cottages offer one bedroom accommodation near to the werf, with a Victorian style bathroom, a kitchenette with a wood burning fireplace, and air conditioning. Guests have access to a shared swimming pool.

Built by renowned architect Sir Herbert Baker, and a Natural Heritage site, Rhodes Cottage is ideal for larger groups. Located two kilometres from the werf, in a secluded spot with magnificent views, the cottage accommodates six guests in three double or twin rooms with two shared bathrooms, whilst a pretty garden annex sleeps four guests in two ensuite double or twin bedrooms. Both properties have air conditioning. A large veranda overlooks the tranquil garden and private swimming pool. Fishing equipment and bicycles are supplied, and a housekeeping service is provided.

Two kilometres from the werf, in a beautiful orchard setting, Orchard Cottages offer between one and four bedrooms, a small kitchenette, and ceiling fans, but no air conditioning. Each cottage has a private garden with a veranda and a barbeque for outdoor dining, plus shared use of a swimming pool. Note that guests’ own transport is required to access the werf and its dining facilities.

Children are extremely welcome, and the farm has a children’s play area. The larger Orchard Cottages are a great option for families; alternatively two small children can be accommodated in the lounges of the Werf Cottages.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
