Overview

Kiba Point belongs to the Nomad Tanzania portfolio and is a sister property to the nearby Sand Rivers Camp. Accessible only by air, this private lodge occupies a stunning secluded riverside location right in the heart of the Selous game reserve, Southern Tanzania.

The thatched main mess area is surrounded by the swimming pool and pretty gardens. Although Kiba’s location isn’t quite as impressive as that of Sand Rivers, it’s a real thrill to see elephants and other animals wandering around this peaceful and private retreat at such close proximity.

The camp has its own team of guides and guests can enjoy all of the activities offered at the main Sand Rivers Camp, including twice daily game drives, bush walks, motorboat safaris and fly camping. The Selous game reserve is a World Heritage site full of diverse habitats and a host of wildlife making it one of the best places in East Africa to experience a safari.

The accommodation is split into four stone and thatch cottage-style bedrooms that house up to eight guests in total. Each room has its own veranda, private plunge pool and en-suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers, running hot and cold water and flush toilet. The cottages are open fronted to maximise wildlife viewing during the day, and heavy netting can be zipped closed at night if guests wish.

Children from eight years of age are welcome, although for safety reasons, fly camping and walking safaris are only available to those aged twelve years and over. One of the four cottages has adjoining rooms for parents and children to share. Although there are no dedicated facilities for children, they are welcomed here and are free to play in the pool and gardens. However, the location is very wild, and while it’s highly uncommon for animals to approach humans, children must be kept under constant parental supervision.

Kiba Point is a high-end option for travellers looking to find an authentic and exclusive safari experience, with a high level of freedom and flexibility.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever
