Overview

Schulphoek House is a contemporary boutique hotel in a stunning coastal setting close to the seaside town of Hermanus, in South Africa’s Western Cape. The recently renovated, eco-friendly property perches above a sheltered cove in an area renowned for excellent seasonal dolphin and whale watching. Boasting an unspoiled, tranquil setting and sweeping ocean views, the property offers 15 generously proportioned, bespoke rooms, along with a restaurant, and a salt water swimming pool set in attractive gardens.

Communal areas include a relaxed restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a seasonal menu focussing on locally sourced and home grown ingredients, including fresh fish, Karoo venison, and a good selection of local Cape wines. The pretty gardens house a variety of colourful plants and flowers, along with a pleasant salt water swimming pool and loungers. The property has an elevated terrace with sweeping ocean views, a tranquil spot for relaxing with a sundowner. A complimentary shuttle service operates to the popular seaside town of Hermanus, 4km away, which offers a weekly market, plus numerous shops and visitor amenities.

Activities include coastal walks from the hotel along various routes, passing distinctive and rare species of fynbos, and wildlife such as otter, mongoose, and tortoise. The bay is a magnet for nature lovers and July to November brings whale watching season, when visitors flock to the area to spot schools of dolphins along with Humpback, Bryde, and mighty Southern Right whales. The latter weigh up to 80 tonnes, and can frequently be spotted swimming close to the shore. Great white sharks can be seen from May to August, and shark cage diving can be arranged locally. Other local activities include boat excursions, sea kayaking, scuba diving, horse riding, and cycling. Several local beaches offer excellent swimming including Grotto Beach, which boasts pristine sands and holds Blue Flag status. Onrus Beach lies adjacent to a calm lagoon, and is ideal for younger children, whilst lively Voelklip Beach is a popular surfing destination.

Accommodation comprises 15 spacious and contemporary rooms, each featuring bespoke furnishings and décor. Each ground floor unit has a private patio and seating overlooking the picturesque gardens, whilst the first floor rooms boast panoramic views across the bay, several with floor to ceiling windows. Each room is comfortably furnished with a king or twin beds, a seating area, desk and chair, and a generous ensuite bathroom with basin, WC, shower, and some with separate bathtub. All units are equipped with HDTV, air conditioning, a complimentary minibar, hot drink facilities, and Wi-Fi.

Children of all ages are most welcome at the property. The hotel offers several two bedroom units, each sleeping up three guests and ideal for families or groups. Each unit has a king and a single bedroom, one or two bathrooms, and comfy seating areas. A number of interconnecting rooms are also available.

Please note, this property is not located in Hermanus town and clients do need their own transport if staying here.

Shuttles are available to take guests to Hermanus town for shopping/restaurants etc. as well as to the wine farms on Hemel-en-Aarde, subject to availability.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
