Overview

Rivendell is a homely and comfortable guesthouse ideal for travellers wishing to save a little on a night or two in the capital of Namibia. Situated in a quiet, residential suburb of Windhoek, it’s only a short drive away from the city centre. With excellent staff and high standards throughout, this is a comfortable step up from typical youth hostel accommodation, yet the property retains a laid-back and welcoming feel.

Set within red-brick buildings, the interiors have a charming simplicity, with white walls and modest decor. Comfortable sofas, satellite TV, and a small book-exchange library are to be found in the lounge, and there’s a cosy self-catering kitchen, complete with honesty bar. Meals can be enjoyed in the kitchen, or on picnic tables on the shaded veranda. There’s a pretty Mediterranean-style courtyard with a good-sized pool, sun loungers, and umbrella-shaded tables and chairs. Cooked and continental breakfast options are offered, and the wonderful staff are happy to recommend and book restaurants nearby, along with taxi services if required. The reception office provides a safety deposit box, and there is secure parking. Internet access and a guest phone are also available.

The Rivendell Guesthouse offers a wide variety of accommodation across its 10 rooms, catering to a range of needs and budgets. Within the main building, double or twin rooms make use of shared bathroom facilities just down the hall, while in a separate building overlooking the pool, there are 4 en-suite double or twin rooms, complete with tea and coffee facilities, and fans for warmer evenings. Though all are decorated to a similar degree of modest practicality, rooms differ in size and facilities. The most luxurious suites are the two self-catering apartments, each with a double bedroom, lounge, kitchenette, air conditioning and satellite TV, and an en-suite bathroom. For those guests simply seeking a place to rest their head, small single rooms are available.

Staff are happy to help with activity recommendations and bookings. For many, Windhoek is merely an international gateway to the more spectacular safari destinations of the country, but a range of exciting day trips and tours in and around the capital are available. The key cultural and historical sights can be explored on an educational city tour, while those with a thrill-seeking streak can enjoy abseiling, climbing, and horse riding adventures. Beyond the town, an excursion into the bush on the N/a’an Ku Se Wildlife Sanctuary gives guests the opportunity to learn about traditional aspects of San culture. Opportunities to see crocodile, giraffe and white rhino are provided on the game drive, with potential sightings of lion, leopard, and cheetah too. If guests simply wish to relax, a range of beauty treatments are provided at the guesthouse by visiting therapists. All activities are subject to additional cost.

The guesthouse welcomes families. There are no minimum age restrictions and plenty of room choices, with the self-catering apartments providing the ideal option. ‘The Gondor’ apartment affords parents the most privacy, with a door separating the bedroom and the lounge area. ‘The Flat’ is also a good family choice, although the sleeping spaces are only partially walled off. For a more economic option, beds or cots can be added to double Room No 5 and triple Room No 6 in the main building, or the larger pool-side Room 1, with all these rooms making use of shared bathroom facilities. The pool is unfenced and unguarded, so parental supervision is essential at all times.

Rivendell Guesthouse offers pristine, comfortable and good value accommodation in a convenient location with friendly staff and great access to central Windhoek and the surrounding area.

  • Trip was great and all the arrangements were excellent so thank you for all the help!

Drivers and transfers were all good - on time and very good service on each trip.

Accommodation was lovely - Douar Samra was amazing (weather could have been better but lovely regardless). Riad in Marrakesh was also great!

All in all a great trip and we loved the variety of the mountains, Marrakesh and the coast.

    Thanks you once again!

  • I was also just about to email you to thank you and the team for arranging yet again, another wonderful experience.

Mount Kenya was spectacular and wild - I think I prefer it to Kili in many ways. The entire support team was professional, friendly and all round fantastic in making sure that we were safe, well fed and well looked after. In particular, we would commend Peter the guide as well as Paul one of the porters who doubled-up as his deputy on summit day. Our route was often shrouded in mist and rain that rapidly gathered in the valleys and moorlands, and we were very impressed at how Peter managed to navigate us safely through all of that notwithstanding. In addition, we loved learning about the history of Mount Kenya from him in the evenings. And ofcourse, I was blown away by the lovely birthday surprise at the end complete with balloons and a delicious cake that had journeyed with us from day 1. One thing we might recommend because of the sudden change in weather (it would sometimes get extremely cold and wet) is for the equipment list to be a little bit more detailed in terms of its recommendations e.g. layers to be moisture-wicking, walking boots be waterproof, doubling up on socks to avoid blisters etc.

El Karama is a beautiful conservancy and the lodge a true labour of love. Great hospitality in a relaxed environment. Delicious, fresh food. We enjoyed the drives, even if we didn't see much wildlife as the heavens opened on us for the last two outings. However, since it was very much geared towards families, I am not sure if I would stay again without kids. That said, I think it was perfect for a 3d/2n stay post mountain, and a much better choice than flying to the masai mara given the limited time we had.

Our transits were smooth. Samuel the driver was always on time, drove safely and kept the vehicle clean.

So it was a brilliant experience and one which I certainly will cherish for some time to come. It was great to work with you for a third time, and I certainly hope it won't be the last

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”
