Overview

GocheGanas Nature Reserve is an upmarket lodge and wellness centre in an elevated wilderness setting, 29 km southeast of the capital city of Windhoek, in central Namibia. The property sits in a 6,000 hectare nature reserve with panoramic hilltop views over the surrounding landscape, yet is only 30 minutes from Windhoek and the international airport, making it a good option for a relaxing start or finish to a holiday in Namibia. Secluded and tranquil, GocheGanas offers 16 well-appointed thatched suites, a hilltop restaurant with super views, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a gym, and a substantial spa and wellness centre.

Communal areas at the lodge include a restaurant and bar with a both indoor and outdoor seating areas, boasting stunning views across the reserve. An outdoor fire pit is a popular spot for a post dinner drink beneath the stars. The extensive onsite spa includes a ‘cave sauna’ and crystal and hydrotherapy baths. Note there is a minimum age restriction of 12 years for use of spa facilities. The lodge boasts an impressive heated indoor pool, plus an unheated outdoor pool with lovely views, and a fully equipped gym. Wi-Fi is available in communal areas, although due to the property’s remote location, the signal may be intermittent.

Activities include early morning and afternoon game drives, and guided walks. The surrounding reserve is home to over 25 species of wildlife including the endangered white rhino, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, springbok, oryx, leopard, and cheetah. The lodge offers mountain bike hire, with the option of guided or non-guided excursions through the reserve, following a series of marked routes.

Accommodation comprises 16 spacious and comfortable thatched suites, spread out on the hillside for privacy. Each suite has large windows to maximise the picturesque surroundings. Each unit has a king size or twin beds draped with mosquito nets, and a spacious ensuite bathroom, many with an indulgent outdoor shower. All suites come with air conditioning, satellite TV, and a minibar. Outside is a private decked veranda with seating.

Children are warmly welcome at the property. Guests under three years of age are accommodated free of charge, with discounts offered for children under 12 years. Each suite can sleep up to two adults and two children under 12. A larger, family unit is also available which can comfortably accommodate four guests. This comprises two double bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom, connected via a spacious veranda. A babysitting service is available on request. As the outdoor pool at the property is unfenced, parents are reminded that children should be supervised at all times.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever
