Overview

Tongabezi lodge is a top end safari lodge on the banks of the Zambezi River, 20km upstream from Victoria Falls, in Zambia. An elegant and modern property in a surprisingly rural area, Tongabezi has a nice range of wildlife whilst still being in close proximity to the Falls themselves.

The lodge very much focuses on exclusivity and romance and hence many of the guest areas are candle lit with river views. A larger camp, Tongabezi has a range of guest areas including cocktail decks, dining and lounge areas and a floating ‘look out’ area, taking advantage of the beautiful riverside location.

Thanks to its tucked away position, Tongabezi Lodge can offer a range of activities in addition to trips to Victoria Falls and game viewing in Victoria Falls National Park. Motorboat safari, canoeing, white water rafting and canyoning are just some of the water sports guests can choose from, as well as cultural excursions to neighbouring villages. Game drives, bush walks and boating trips are all included and an onsite spa offers a range of treatments.

Accommodation is split into five cottage rooms and six ‘houses’, all of which are individually named and designed. All the suites are large and elegantly furnished, with private outdoor decks overlooking the river and all but the ‘Tree House’ have folding doors. Personal valets are assigned to every room and we recommend looking at the property’s website for an in depth description of each ‘house’ to see which is most appropriate for your stay. (For example, The Garden House is particularly suited to families with a private pool and plenty of space for kids to play).

Tongabezi welcomes children from 7 years old and is a camp very much geared up for children. Dining times and menus can be adjusted to suit families as well as a host of activities being offered including drumming lessons, a visit to a nearby village school, tiger fishing and quiz nights. With so much to do, with or without parents, this is a great choice for all the family.

Whilst Tongabezi is not in true ‘safari land’, this can be a great place to include either at the beginning or end of a safari and in order to visit Victoria Falls. Privately owned and operated, this English couple have done a fantastic job of providing high levels of service, accommodation and activities. One of our favourites, Tongabezi is the lap of luxury in a picturesque location.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever
