Overview

Tloma is an attractive, rural lodge located in the Karatu area of Northern Tanzania. Situated on the raised shoulder of a valley, the property affords wonderful views across the surrounding coffee plantations towards the breath-taking Ngorongoro Crater.

The main building houses a pleasant lounge, dining area and viewing terrace. The beautiful gardens and large heated pool are a real draw, and a massage service is also available. This is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a change of pace and scenery after a busy safari schedule.

The range of activities on offer is superb, including visits to the forests of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, local waterfalls, and nearby farms and villages. Day trips to Lake Eyasi can also be arranged. Although the Ngorongoro Crater is quite some distance from the lodge and the property itself does not offer trips there, we tend to deploy vehicles for exclusive use with private guides, giving guests the flexibility to make the visit if they wish.

With 24 colonial cottage-style rooms and 12 more basic ‘garden-view’ rooms, the lodge is relatively large in size. All rooms are modest but spacious with twin or double beds, en-suite bathrooms and outdoor seating areas. Room and laundry services are available.

Children aged 6 years and up are welcome. There are 4 triple rooms, or 4 inter-connecting rooms depending on family requirements. The heated pool and lovely gardens are a real treat for families and a great place to rest between activities.

Tloma Lodge is a good quality, mid-range property in a peaceful and scenic location offering a wide range of activities and cultural experiences.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever
