Overview

Hotel Capitan Suizo is a family-run, beachfront hotel in the popular visitor destination of Tamarindo on Costa Rica’s north Pacific coast. This charming boutique property sits on the town’s outskirts, nestled in lovely tropical gardens beside a tranquil stretch of sandy beach. Offering 35 rooms and bungalows, a restaurant, swimming pool, and spa, it is a relaxing midrange option for travellers seeking spacious accommodation and superb ocean views away from the bustle of town.

Communal areas include an open-sided beachside restaurant and bar with an airy thatched ceiling and ocean views, serving generous breakfast buffets and a la carte lunches and dinners. The menu focuses on European and Costa Rican cuisine, with musical entertainment regularly provided during the evenings. Private dining can be arranged upon request. The hotel provides hammocks and loungers on the beach and there’s a lovely freeform swimming pool which has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate existing trees on the property. There’s also an onsite gift shop, along with an internet and computer station. Complimentary Wi-Fi is provided, with a decent signal throughout the resort. The hotel also offers a pool table, table tennis, and board games.

Activities include swimming, snorkelling, body boarding, surfing, paddle boarding and kayaking. The hotel provides complimentary snorkelling gear, body boards, kayaks and beach volleyball equipment. At 4km in length, Tamarindo beach is perfect for walking or jogging. Considered one of Costa Rica’s safest, the beach has long attracted surfers from beginner to advanced level, and lessons can be arranged. Guests are invited to use gym facilities at a neighbouring beach club. Scuba diving, sailing, horse riding, and golf are also available locally, subject to additional charge, along with relaxing sunset boat excursions around the bay. Tamarind town offers a wealth of amenities including markets, shops, cafes and restaurants, all within a 10 to 15-minute walk from the hotel.

The accommodation comprises 29 spacious rooms in the main hotel and six bungalows set apart from one another in the tropical gardens. All units have a king size bed with a mosquito net, a generous ensuite bathroom with shower, and all have air conditioning, fans, a fridge, hot drink facilities, and Wi-Fi. Many rooms have a lounge area with a double sofa bed, and all have sliding doors leading onto a private balcony or terrace with super ocean views. Note that televisions are not provided, the emphasis being on outdoor living and ‘switching off’. There’s a large, four-bedroom suite in the main hotel which sleeps up to eight people in two double and two single bedrooms, all with air conditioning. There are two bathrooms, both with a shower, and one with a Jacuzzi. The spacious lounge contains a sofa bed and a ceiling fan but no air conditioning and two of the bedrooms lead out onto a generous balcony.

Children are very welcome at the hotel. Most of the rooms can accommodate up to three guests, with reductions for guests under 12 when sharing with an adult. Given the hotel’s beachside location, parents are reminded to keep children under adult supervision at all times.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We just wanted to thank you for an absolutely amazing holiday. Everything went exactly to plan and we were blown away with the quality of the guides, transport and accommodation. The itinerary was perfect for our family with a great mix of guided and free days and the different destinations complemented each other well. We will definitely be using Tourdust again for our next trip! Particular highlights were the Ha Long Bay cruise, Hanoi, and the morning cycle tour in Siam Reap
