Overview

Satao Camp is an excellent budget option if you want to stick to a simple bush and beach itinerary in Kenya and are short on time. Although not a place we would usually recommend to experienced safari-goers, first timers will love this camp.

Tsavo East is reached by road from the Coast around Mombasa in around 4 hours. It is a vast, dry area that hosts large herds of dust red elephants and reasonable numbers of cheetah and lion.

A big highlight of the camp is the watering hole, which attracts giraffe, elephant, the occasional lion and excellent bird-life to the camp. Game drives are shared with other guests and take place in open sided 4WD vehicles in the morning and late afternoon. Thanks to its location, you are very unlikely to see another vehicle in the park. The 4WDs are open sided seating up to 6 people.

There are 15 tents plus 5 suite tents. Safari style tents are mounted on raised platforms with verandah areas, comfortable beds and large plumbed bathrooms with safari showers. There are pleasant communal spaces and a raised viewing platform over the watering hole.

Satao Camp welcomes children who love seeing the wildlife coming right into camp. As with any open camp, you'll need to keep an eye on the kids at all times, and movements around camp at night are escorted by a ranger. The tents are large enough to accommodate up to a family of four with two adults and two children under 12 years old. With 6 people per 4WD on game drives, it is likely larger families will have a vehicle to themselves.

  • We had the most incredible time thank you. We loved Karen Blixen camp and felt part of a family there, it was incredibly special. And Breezes was very relaxing.
We can't fault all the transfers and the moment we were greeted on the tarmac at Nairobi airport we knew we were going to be well cared for.

Thank you so much to you and all the Tourdust team for making it such a happy and memorable trip.

  • We had an amazing trip. Everything was well thought out and so much fun. What a great way to truly see the country and learn the culture.

Joseph was the perfect guide. Very kind, professional, knowledgeable and patient. The kids loved Joseph and keep asking when will they meet him again. He found the Big 5 for us which was unforgettable! Please pass along our appreciation to Joseph.

Maji Moto was also another incredible experience. They had great customer service and we loved experiencing their culture.

Sunbird was absolutely beautiful and I wish we had more time there. We loved the view of the lake!

One suggestion to make the trip even better for other guests in the future would be to have a cooler with drinks and snacks in the Jeep at all times because a ton of driving is involved and it would be helpful to have a cold drink and snacks during the long trip.

Thanks again for organizing this experience of a lifetime for us!

  • I had just the most incredible time on the climb.

The team were incredible and just so accommodating. I really only have good things to say as it was such a great experience.

George was as good as a guide as it gets, very articulate and made sure I was comfortable the whole way up with frequent briefings.
