Tucked away in the far northwest of Peru is Mancora, a delightful hidden gem and an increasingly popular beach resort. Mancora offers some of the warmest waters and best surf in Peru and is the best option for some beach R&R at the end of a busy trip around Peru. The wonderful beaches together stretch for over a mile and are the hub of much of the town’s activity. There are also plenty of shops, restaurants, bars and clubs catering for both visitors and locals alike. Despite being very tourist friendly, Mancora retains a pleasantly peaceful and relaxed atmosphere, although the town can become noticeably livelier in the summer months when visitors flock in from across Peru and beyond.
One of the reasons why the town has become so popular is because of its exceptionally favourable climate, with on average around 300 days of sunshine per year. The summer season lasts from December till March and temperatures are still fairly warm during the rest of the year, even at night. The accommodation mostly consists of beachfront hotels, with some options set further back from the beaches.
Surfing and kite surfing are the main activities here, along with lazing on the beach and going for leisurely coastal walks. There’s a busy main street with plenty of places to eat, drink and shop. Unsurprisingly, quite a few eateries specialise in locally-sourced seafood, many of which offer dining right on the beach. If you’re there during the busy summer months and are looking for a quieter get-away, day trips to Los Organos, which is around fifteen minutes away, are a good option.
