Overview

Chindeni Bush Camp is a modern and upmarket lagoon-side camp occupying a remote position in the southern sector of South Luangwa National Park, eastern Zambia. One of the park’s most luxurious properties, this serene retreat offers excellent hosting, good food, elegant accommodation, and a good provision of creature comforts in an authentic safari setting. The camp overlooks the Chaymba Lagoon, a pretty side-water off the main Luangwa River. Home to prolific birdlife, and often frequented by elephant and zebra, Chindendi boasts some of the best game viewing to be experienced directly from a lodge in the South Luangwa National park.

Nestled within a shady grove of ebony trees, the camp sits on stilts above an oxbow lake, with stunning views across the lagoon and beyond to the Chindeni escarpment. The open-air main spaces are set over a split-level deck beneath canvas, with the upper deck featuring a dining table for communal meals, and the lower deck housing a stylish lounge area and bar. Refurbished in 2010, the décor has an understated elegance, with comfortable soft furnishings and some delightful touches.

The accommodation consists of four incredibly spacious tented chalets on raised wooden platforms. Each chalet houses a large sitting room with wicker chairs, and a private deck complete with bean bags and hammocks in which to relax and take in the tranquil lagoon and its resident wildlife. Mosquito-netted beds are set out in king-size double or twin formation, and a wardrobe and writing desk complete each room. All chalets have ensuite bathrooms with a shower, toilet, and double vanity basin. Laundry is included.

Activities at Chindeni Bush Camp place firm emphasis on top quality guiding, and include day and night game drives and walking safaris, with wildlife at its most prolific during the dry June to October months when animals flock to the river. Whilst the southern sector of the park might on first glance appear less rich in wildlife than other areas, expert guides will ensure fantastic encounters and memorable tracking experiences, and the almost non-existent vehicle traffic is a real bonus. A morning’s walk might provide thrilling up-close encounters with lion, hyena, and elephant, and afternoon game drives often continue on into the evening darkness, with the promise of potential sightings of elusive species such as leopard, aardvark, and porcupine.

Children over 12 years of age are welcome, although the lack of swimming pool and designated children’s activities means a stay would best suit older children with a keen interest in wildlife. That said, it is possible for children below 12 to stay if the whole camp is booked out exclusively to one group, although note that children of this age are not permitted on walking safaris in the park. With no specific family rooms or triple rooms available, families are obliged to book at least two suites, and parents are reminded that due to the camp’s lagoon-side position and the presence of nearby game, adult supervision is essential at all times.

  • It was FANTASTIC! Beautifully organised, everything worked like clockwork. We agreed that we had the best support team ever (and we have experience) - all delightful, very professional and nothing was too much bother.

It clearly couldn't have been a better route, such a wonderful mix of landscapes. And plenty of acclimatisation time. Nonetheless, I was glad of my summit oxygen.

Kit excellent. Double good mattresses made for most comfortable trek camping ever. Tents v good. Mess tent pretty windproof, which was vital for enjoyment. Best camp loo ever!

My favourite day was Shira Cathedral. Amazing.

  • Hi Lisa,

The safari trip was excellent! The stay, the food and the people were all very nice. We were happy to have Ryan and Stanley as our game drive guides they brought us up close to the animals and Ryan gave very good information throughout.

Would definitely recommend to friends who are interested in safaris :)

Also, thanks much for your help, particularly keeping the room for my Brother and his wife they’ve enjoyed the safari very much too!

    Best regards,
    Woan Chyi

  • We had a fantastic time and all the arrangements worked perfectly.
We were very impressed with the quality and service levels of all 4 locations visited and it was truly a holiday of a lifetime.
Thank you to you and to Lisa for giving us this experience.
Particular highlights for us – really the whole experience, but of particular impact:
Breathtaking scenery at Cathedral Peak Hotel
Rhino Ridge game drives incredible, thanks to guide (we had their head guide, Hala, who’s knowledge, enthusiasm, kindness, interaction, ability to spot wildlife was out of this world)
Luxury of Rhino Ridge (shower, food, views, service)
Immersion in nature, torch lit meal on last night and beach trip at Kosi Forest Lodge
Level of service, quality of food throughout
