Set in a secluded valley in the western region of Namibia, Erongo Wilderness Lodge lives up to its name. There are a number of guided walks and nature drives on offer, designed to immerse guests in the surrounding landscape, and the lodge even has luxury living facilities built around existing rocks and trees.
Activities at Erongo Wilderness Lodge centre on a particular approach to nature explorations: relax and take your time. The sundowner walks, early morning walks, and morning walks offer guided treks of varying degrees of length through the rich nearby fauna. Guests can also participate in Nature Drives, which are equally relaxing.
One of the destinations on the drive is Paula’s Cave, which features bushman rock art that guests can explore, after which a slow drive back to the lodge offers a great opportunity to spot nocturnal game. The Erongo area is home to a plethora of birdlife, and guests can expect to spot a variety of unique species on the self-guided walks, from Black Eagles to Plum-coloured Starlings, and raptors to the smallest sunbirds.
Guest accommodation consists of 10 tented suites tucked away in the rocky Erongo Massif, offering good views of the surrounding private Erongo Mountain Nature Conservancy. Each is spacious and comfortable, with en-suite facilities.
The main lodge has a swimming pool, which has been built into the rock, and a deck overlooking the plains. The lodge’s location near the town of Omaruru gives guests a chance to discover local Namibian culture. While this may detract from the wilderness feel, the lodge more than compensates by providing a great spot from which the Erongo mountain landscape can be explored, along with lovely views.
Erongo Wilderness Lodge welcomes children of all ages, but a stay will be best suited to families with older children able to participate in the various walking activities on offer.
We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!
The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.
I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.
The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.
All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).
From my seven-year-old son:
I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.
In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths. Will be a trip we remember forever
