Mkhaya Stone Camp is a wilderness camp within the Mkhaya Game Reserve in Swaziland, central South Africa. This rustic property sits right in the heart of the reserve in a tranquil setting of riverine forest and bush, overlooking a dry riverbed. Renowned for its protection of endangered species including the rare black rhino, Mkhaya Reserve is also home to leopard, white rhino, hippo, elephant, giraffe, sable, and zebra. The camp offers intimate hosting and informed guiding along with simple yet comfortable accommodation in twelve stone and thatch cottages. Tranquil and atmospheric, it is a great low-budget option for travellers seeking an immersive experience in Swaziland’s foremost wilderness reserve.
Communal areas in the thatched and open-sided main lodge include a reception and bar area with a small gift shop, and an airy lounge with comfy seating and binoculars for wildlife spotting. Hearty bush meals made with local produce are served around the campfire or at a communal table beneath a vast, ancient Sausage Tree. An alternative thatched dining area is available during periods of less clement weather. The camp runs on solar power, and note that due to the remote bush location, Wi-Fi connectivity is limited.
Activities include morning and evening game drives and guided walks, including thrilling rhino tracking with experienced guides. Birdwatching walks are also available. Wildlife can be enjoyed in camp at ‘Kirky’s Hide’, a great observation point overlooking a seasonal watering hole.
The accommodation comprises 12 distinctive, semi-open stone cottages with high thatched ceilings, and half walls open to the bush. Spaced apart between the trees for privacy, each cottage is traditionally furnished and can accommodate between two and six guests. All units have double or twin beds draped with mosquito nets, and an ensuite bathroom with basin, WC, and shower. Lighting is provided by paraffin lighters and candles. Each cottage has a private patio with a table and seating, ideal for watching the nyala and warthog who regularly visit.
Children over ten years of age are welcome at Mkhaya Stone Camp. There are two family units, each sleeping from four to six guests in one open-plan bedroom with single and double beds. A larger cottage is also available with two separate sleeping areas divided by an internal wall, accommodating up to six guests.
We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!
The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.
I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.
The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.
All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).
From my seven-year-old son:
I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.
In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths. Will be a trip we remember forever
