Vilanculos Beach Lodge is one of the most popular of the many accommodation options in the attractive coastal town of Vilanculos, southern Mozambique. This charming and unpretentious property combines top-notch service with a down-to-earth feel and sports wonderful ocean views. It’s located a short walk north of the lively town centre, offering a sense of peace and seclusion within easy reach of local amenities. The lodge accommodates up to 48 guests and is set in lovely gardens with its own infinity pool complete with fabulous sea views, and a spa.
Room category choices include the Deluxe Double or Twin Bungalow, and the Family Suite. There are some twenty-two Deluxe Bungalows altogether, of which fourteen are adjoining and eight are stand-alone; these rooms can be made up as doubles or twins and come with ensuite bathrooms with showers. The bungalows are set on ironwood stilts and have thatched roofs, with the interiors featuring white walls and an abundance of characterful wood furnishings throughout. They are set out across the pretty gardens and many of them have sea views. All rooms at the lodge are air-conditioned, and mosquito nets are provided – note that mosquitoes are present year-round and bedrooms are sprayed daily.
The lodge’s own activity centre provides equipment for various sports and pursuits, including beach football, kayaking, volleyball, paddle boarding and even drumming. Plenty of other activities can be arranged, from scuba diving and kite surfing, to quad biking and boat cruises. Fishing expeditions, sailing trips on traditional dhow boats and scenic sunset cruises are also popular options. A visit to the nearby Bazaruto Archipelago to explore these beautiful islands, famed for their biodiversity and unspoiled natural beauty, is a must and guided village tours provide the opportunity to get to know the local community.
The restaurant serves an appetising mix of Mozambican, Portuguese and international cuisine, and offers both indoor and outdoor dining. Lighter meals and drinks are provided at the fully-equipped bar which is located right beside the infinity pool. There’s also a spa offering plenty of treatments such as massages and hot stone therapy.
Children are welcome and the designated Family Suite sleeps up to four and is set on stilts with lovely ocean views. It comes with two en-suite bedrooms, a comfy lounge area and a large, covered veranda with outdoor seating. There is plenty for all age-groups to do in the area and parents are reminded, due to the unguarded pool and beach-side nature of the property, to keep their children under constant adult supervision.
We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!
The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.
I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.
The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.
All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).
From my seven-year-old son:
I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.
In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths. Will be a trip we remember forever
