Overview

Laguna Lodge is well positioned for those looking to explore the much-visited Tortuguero National Park in Costa Rica’s north eastern climes. This expansive lodge has 160 rooms and covers some 15 acres, lying on a narrow strip of land accessible only by boat, with the Caribbean Sea on one side and the area’s main jungle-fringed Tortuguero Lagoon on the other. The property is designed to be as eco-friendly as possible and has several acres of gardens that are exceptionally rich in plant life and home to a large number of butterfly and bird species. There’s a wealth of activities on offer, including some cultural visits, and some phenomenal wildlife right on the doorstep.

The many rooms are spread across six acres in several different buildings. All of them are simple and straightforward in design, using wooden furnishings to lend them a natural feel. All rooms offer a decent amount of space and a good number of basic comforts, including a ceiling fan, an outdoor wooden bench, and hot water. There are single, double or triple formations to choose from.

There’s a good range of activities to take part in; some of them are included in any stay at the lodge, while others are optional and available for an extra charge. Two activities which are invariably included are a cultural tour of Tortuguero town including the school, church, shops and recycling plant, and an unbeatable boat excursion through the national park’s enchanting canals. These activities are seamlessly led by dedicated expert guides and are a great way for guests to learn about the area’s rich history and fascinating wildlife. As for optional activities, there are guided visits through the lodge’s extensive gardens, an early morning sunrise boat tour, a sea turtle nesting trip (July to October only), and a beach walk to see sea turtles hatching (September to November only). There is direct beach access from the lodge and guests are free to wander along the long stretch of sand and watch sea turtles hatching in their own time if they don’t wish to pay extra for a guided tour.

Meals are served in the open-air restaurant that overlooks the Tortuguero Lagoon. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served here, with all food freshly prepared using locally sourced ingredients. The main bar overlooks the lagoon and it’s decking is right over the water; there are also two smaller bars, each located by one of the lodge’s two swimming pools.

Children of all ages are welcome and although there may be age restrictions on some activities, there’s plenty for all ages to enjoy in the area. Parents are reminded that, due to the rural, waterside location of the lodge, children must be kept under constant adult supervision.

  • It really was absolutely amazing. Faisal was wonderful (our driver for the majority of the trip) – such a lovely person and made everything feel so easy and relaxed. The whole experience was incredibly well put together and completely seamless from start to finish. The Sahara Desert was definitely the highlight for me – truly unforgettable – but honestly every part of the trip was special.

  • Thank you yet again for another meticulously organised and executed holiday (our 5th with you). Every aspect worked perfectly.
Please could you pass on our sincere thanks to your agent in Sri Lanka; Lakshita, our driver and guide, absolutely made the trip for us - he was so keen for us to have the best experience possible. He was organised, kind, interested, punctual, the car was always spotless, and he was an excellent driver. His extensive knowledge was really appreciated by us and was exactly what we had hoped for in a guide. I think the highlight for us was our day in Anuradhapura (7 hours of absorbing history and culture), but there was so much to learn and absorb every day. He also made several suggestions for things that he thought we might like that weren't in our itinerary, and then booked them for us. These included an ayurvedic massage after climbing Sigiriya, a cultural show (an hour of touristy fun!), reef snorkelling with turtles (a real highlight for me - I wish we could have stayed all day), a lagoon boat trip and visit to a cinnamon island, a turtle sanctuary visit, and a gemstone factory visit. He also managed to get us a private tour of Lunanguga, which Peter thoroughly enjoyed. We also really enjoyed the tea factory tour.
Our guide for the hike was also really excellent, and he and Lakshita made sure that our day was perfectly tailored to our (my) ability.
All our accommodation was also perfectly selected. Our favourite was the Ceylon tea trails bungalow (just perfect!), but The Villa Bentota came a close second as a perfect way to relax at the end of the trip. Our villa and the grounds at Uga at Ulagalla were also beautiful.
(Our only slightly disappointing day was the whale watching - no whales wanted to be seen on that particular day, plus I was very sea-sick despite taking meds! The tour organisers offered us a repeat day the following day, which we declined! Having said that, being out on the water was still enjoyable, up to a point...).
I'm sure I've missed out something - we basically loved it all and felt that the balance of the itinerary was perfect for us (we used the 'rest' day in Galle to do the snorkelling, lagoon, and turtles)
    Thank you very, very much.
