Evergreen Lodge is a great value option in Tortuguero. Rooms are basic but comfortable and food is average, but this comes in at a fraction of the price of more luxurious options in the area and the wildlife experience on the boat trips is still excellent.
Accessible only by boat, Evergreen Lodge is found in a breathtakingly beautiful spot brimming with a rich abundance of flora and fauna amidst an extensive series of jungle-fringed canals and waterways. This friendly property is just a short distance from Tortuguero National Park, which was established back in 1975 and is today one of Costa Rica’s most popular national parks due to its awe-inspiring biodiversity. The lodge’s 66 bungalows and cabins have a pristine yet rustic feel and are designed to blend into the natural surroundings.
All 66 rooms are spacious and comfortable, and feature natural wood furnishings. Due to the lodge’s eco-friendly policies, there’s no air conditioning anywhere on site, though there is a ceiling fan in each of the rooms. Note that there’s no TV or radio in the rooms - this is to enable guests to better hear and appreciate the vibrant, magical sounds of the surrounding rainforest. There’s a private bathroom in every room, with hot water readily available.
Buffet-style meals are served three times a day in the lodge’s open-air restaurant. There’s also a bar, a freshwater swimming pool and a spa with plenty of soothing treatments to choose from.
The lodge offers packages for either two or three nights. Guided nature walks are on offer in the surrounding area, as are visits to the lodge’s very own eight-platform canopy, which offers spectacular aerial views of the lodge itself, the rainforest and the nearby network of canals. It’s possible to explore the Totuguero canals by boat or kayak with experienced, expert guides, and to learn all about the famed resident turtles. A visit to the Tortuguero National Park is a must, although note that there is an additional cost for admission. The park is perhaps most famous for its turtle population and many who come here make a point of visiting during the nesting season which lasts from July to October every year.
Families with children of any age are welcome to stay at the lodge. Those up to four years of age stay for free if sharing with two adults, and a maximum of two children per room is allowed. Youngsters of 5 to 11 years pay a child rate, and those over 12 stay on an adult rate. Parents are reminded that due to the wild, waterside location of the property, children must remain under adult supervision at all times.
It really was absolutely amazing. Faisal was wonderful (our driver for the majority of the trip) – such a lovely person and made everything feel so easy and relaxed. The whole experience was incredibly well put together and completely seamless from start to finish. The Sahara Desert was definitely the highlight for me – truly unforgettable – but honestly every part of the trip was special.

Thank you yet again for another meticulously organised and executed holiday (our 5th with you). Every aspect worked perfectly.
Please could you pass on our sincere thanks to your agent in Sri Lanka; Lakshita, our driver and guide, absolutely made the trip for us - he was so keen for us to have the best experience possible. He was organised, kind, interested, punctual, the car was always spotless, and he was an excellent driver. His extensive knowledge was really appreciated by us and was exactly what we had hoped for in a guide. I think the highlight for us was our day in Anuradhapura (7 hours of absorbing history and culture), but there was so much to learn and absorb every day. He also made several suggestions for things that he thought we might like that weren't in our itinerary, and then booked them for us. These included an ayurvedic massage after climbing Sigiriya, a cultural show (an hour of touristy fun!), reef snorkelling with turtles (a real highlight for me - I wish we could have stayed all day), a lagoon boat trip and visit to a cinnamon island, a turtle sanctuary visit, and a gemstone factory visit. He also managed to get us a private tour of Lunanguga, which Peter thoroughly enjoyed. We also really enjoyed the tea factory tour.
Our guide for the hike was also really excellent, and he and Lakshita made sure that our day was perfectly tailored to our (my) ability.
All our accommodation was also perfectly selected. Our favourite was the Ceylon tea trails bungalow (just perfect!), but The Villa Bentota came a close second as a perfect way to relax at the end of the trip. Our villa and the grounds at Uga at Ulagalla were also beautiful.
(Our only slightly disappointing day was the whale watching - no whales wanted to be seen on that particular day, plus I was very sea-sick despite taking meds! The tour organisers offered us a repeat day the following day, which we declined! Having said that, being out on the water was still enjoyable, up to a point...).
I'm sure I've missed out something - we basically loved it all and felt that the balance of the itinerary was perfect for us (we used the 'rest' day in Galle to do the snorkelling, lagoon, and turtles)
Thank you very, very much.
