Overview

Hotel Costa Verde is a quirky, characterful property located on the picturesque Pacific Ocean coast right beside Costa Rica’s famed Manuel Antonio National Park. It’s a fairly large resort with plenty of rooms and a wide range of activities on offer, not to mention the many on-site facilities and amenities. It caters well for those visiting the park and makes for a good, budget-friendly option.

For accommodation, there are quite a few different options to choose from, ranging from studio apartments and suites, to houses and bungalows. Worthy of particular note is the hotel’s ‘727 Fuselage Home’. This highly unique suite is set in a renovated Boeing 727 dating back to 1965 that’s been extensively outfitted on the inside to transform it into welcoming accommodation. The plane once flew passengers across oceans, and now it functions as a two-bedroom suite perched on a pedestal some 50 feet high, providing unparalleled views. There’s also the similar ‘Cockpit Cottage’ which is fashioned out of a McDonnell Douglas, MD-80 fuselage. If travelling without children, there’s the adults-only Costa Verde II, a private building made up of studio apartments and a penthouse for anyone over 17 years of age. All rooms here have a balcony with views of either the rainforest canopy or the ocean and it’s no more than 10 minutes’ walk to the beach from any of the rooms. Note, however, that it’s a distinctly uphill walk on the way back and thus the return journey may take longer!

There are three cliffside pools dotted throughout the resort, each one surrounded by plenty of sun loungers, not to mention breath-taking ocean views. The hotel’s four restaurants serve up an enticing array of local, national and international dishes. Much care is taken to ensure that each eatery offers a unique and memorable dining experience. El Avion, for example, is a quirky pub and restaurant set inside a lovingly preserved C-123 Fairchild plane. There’s also El Wagon, a delightful outdoor restaurant serving informal food and with a colourful mosaic tiled floor depicting all sorts of animals.

There’s a large and varied line-up of activities to take part in. Some of the many options include waterfall rappelling, catamaran tours, canopy biking, parasailing, yoga classes, horseback riding on the beach and sunset sails. It’s no surprise that the highlight for many is the Manuel Antonio National Park; it’s actually the smallest of Costa Rica’s national parks and note that it can get quite busy owing to its fine beaches, impressive biodiversity and scenic hiking trails.

Children of all ages are warmly welcome; the adults-only section of the hotel only represents about 10% of the property. There’s plenty for all age groups to do in the area and children will love the colourful and somewhat quirky surroundings and will no doubt enjoy splashing about in the swimming pools as well.

  • It really was absolutely amazing. Faisal was wonderful (our driver for the majority of the trip) – such a lovely person and made everything feel so easy and relaxed. The whole experience was incredibly well put together and completely seamless from start to finish. The Sahara Desert was definitely the highlight for me – truly unforgettable – but honestly every part of the trip was special.

  • Thank you yet again for another meticulously organised and executed holiday (our 5th with you). Every aspect worked perfectly.
Please could you pass on our sincere thanks to your agent in Sri Lanka; Lakshita, our driver and guide, absolutely made the trip for us - he was so keen for us to have the best experience possible. He was organised, kind, interested, punctual, the car was always spotless, and he was an excellent driver. His extensive knowledge was really appreciated by us and was exactly what we had hoped for in a guide. I think the highlight for us was our day in Anuradhapura (7 hours of absorbing history and culture), but there was so much to learn and absorb every day. He also made several suggestions for things that he thought we might like that weren't in our itinerary, and then booked them for us. These included an ayurvedic massage after climbing Sigiriya, a cultural show (an hour of touristy fun!), reef snorkelling with turtles (a real highlight for me - I wish we could have stayed all day), a lagoon boat trip and visit to a cinnamon island, a turtle sanctuary visit, and a gemstone factory visit. He also managed to get us a private tour of Lunanguga, which Peter thoroughly enjoyed. We also really enjoyed the tea factory tour.
Our guide for the hike was also really excellent, and he and Lakshita made sure that our day was perfectly tailored to our (my) ability.
All our accommodation was also perfectly selected. Our favourite was the Ceylon tea trails bungalow (just perfect!), but The Villa Bentota came a close second as a perfect way to relax at the end of the trip. Our villa and the grounds at Uga at Ulagalla were also beautiful.
(Our only slightly disappointing day was the whale watching - no whales wanted to be seen on that particular day, plus I was very sea-sick despite taking meds! The tour organisers offered us a repeat day the following day, which we declined! Having said that, being out on the water was still enjoyable, up to a point...).
I'm sure I've missed out something - we basically loved it all and felt that the balance of the itinerary was perfect for us (we used the 'rest' day in Galle to do the snorkelling, lagoon, and turtles)
    Thank you very, very much.
