Overview

Latitude 10 is an intimate boutique beach hotel with a private, exclusive feel located on the outskirts of the scruffy but trendy surf town of Santa Teresa. With its open-sided rooms, Latitude 10 has the feel of a wilderness rainforest lodge, a design that is slightly incongruous with its location on the outskirts of a fairly busy town. Although undoubtedly one of Costa Rica's best beach front hotels, we feel Latitude 10 is best suited for couples and honeymooners looking for a romantic, relaxed and exclusive resort in easy reach of the hip restaurants and bars of Santa Teresa.

Latitude 10 lies on the outskirts of Santa Teresa, on the west coast of Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula. The location is a little too far to walk into town, but complimentary bikes are available, and it is a short taxi drive if heading into town for dinner. Santa Teresa itself has a fast growing reputation as one of Costa Rica's most fashionable surf towns and tends to attract a younger more party orientated crowd. The plus side of that is that there are some fantastic hipster oriented cafes, bars and restaurants on offer.

The hotel’s pretty grounds span some seven acres fronting an attractive rugged beachfront, and the property is very open to all the sights and sounds of the jungle so is best suited to those with an adventurous spirit. Please note the beach in front of the resort is not really suitable for swimming or surfing.

There are just five characterful casitas, or guestrooms, all nestled among the rainforest trees with views out on to the ocean. The open-air design of the rooms allows for constant air flow and helps keep the interiors cool thus negating the need for air conditioning units, although ceiling fans are provided for particularly hot days. There are three categories of room to choose from: the standard Guestroom, the larger Junior Suite and the most expensive option, the Master Suite. All the rooms and suites have an airy yet homely and comfortable feel and they are all set well apart from one another to guarantee privacy and plenty of peace and quiet. Bathrooms are open to the sky and set in charming, private gardens. The rooms are gorgeous, but the open design does mean they are definitely not suitable for the squeamish or those who wanting a more private contained room with air con! (Florblanca just down the road is a better bet if that is your priority)

While the pace of life here is decidedly relaxed, there’s a great deal to do in the surrounding area from surfing, snorkelling and cycling to town visits, jungle adventures, cookery lessons, yoga classes or simply lolling around in hammocks or the lovely pool. Those looking to sample the area’s rich surfing culture can try it out for themselves, with lessons available for everyone, including complete beginners. It is worth noting that surfing does not take place on the beach in front of the resort, but at different beaches depending on conditions. Horseback rides are a great way to discover the beautiful natural surroundings, with rides along the beach, up the hills and through the rainforest all possible. Snorkelling around Tortuga Island (boat trip) and witnessing the schools of brilliantly coloured fish is a real treat, as are guided tours of the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve and swims in a nearby waterfall. There’s an abundance of wildlife to see in the area from spider monkeys to butterflies and some excellent bird life. The town of Santa Teresa is within easy reach – in fact, the hotel offers complimentary bike hire so guests can discover the town’s delightful shops and eateries in their own time. For chilling out back at base there’s the on-site spa, Meridian, which offers yoga classes, pampering treatments and soothing massages. Ceviche and cocktail making are also great fun activities offered by the hotel.

Children of all ages are very welcome albeit the hotel does have a more romantic grown up atmosphere. That being said if you are keen on staying here as a family, there are plenty of activities and experiences everyone can take part in together, although for safety reasons please note that some activities will be subject to age restrictions. Those travelling in larger groups may wish to consider reserving the entire resort for exclusive use, which can accommodate up to 12 guests. Given that the lodge is open to the jungle, parents are reminded to ensure that their children are under adult supervision at all times.

  • It really was absolutely amazing. Faisal was wonderful (our driver for the majority of the trip) – such a lovely person and made everything feel so easy and relaxed. The whole experience was incredibly well put together and completely seamless from start to finish. The Sahara Desert was definitely the highlight for me – truly unforgettable – but honestly every part of the trip was special.

  • Thank you yet again for another meticulously organised and executed holiday (our 5th with you). Every aspect worked perfectly.
Please could you pass on our sincere thanks to your agent in Sri Lanka; Lakshita, our driver and guide, absolutely made the trip for us - he was so keen for us to have the best experience possible. He was organised, kind, interested, punctual, the car was always spotless, and he was an excellent driver. His extensive knowledge was really appreciated by us and was exactly what we had hoped for in a guide. I think the highlight for us was our day in Anuradhapura (7 hours of absorbing history and culture), but there was so much to learn and absorb every day. He also made several suggestions for things that he thought we might like that weren't in our itinerary, and then booked them for us. These included an ayurvedic massage after climbing Sigiriya, a cultural show (an hour of touristy fun!), reef snorkelling with turtles (a real highlight for me - I wish we could have stayed all day), a lagoon boat trip and visit to a cinnamon island, a turtle sanctuary visit, and a gemstone factory visit. He also managed to get us a private tour of Lunanguga, which Peter thoroughly enjoyed. We also really enjoyed the tea factory tour.
Our guide for the hike was also really excellent, and he and Lakshita made sure that our day was perfectly tailored to our (my) ability.
All our accommodation was also perfectly selected. Our favourite was the Ceylon tea trails bungalow (just perfect!), but The Villa Bentota came a close second as a perfect way to relax at the end of the trip. Our villa and the grounds at Uga at Ulagalla were also beautiful.
(Our only slightly disappointing day was the whale watching - no whales wanted to be seen on that particular day, plus I was very sea-sick despite taking meds! The tour organisers offered us a repeat day the following day, which we declined! Having said that, being out on the water was still enjoyable, up to a point...).
I'm sure I've missed out something - we basically loved it all and felt that the balance of the itinerary was perfect for us (we used the 'rest' day in Galle to do the snorkelling, lagoon, and turtles)
    Thank you very, very much.
