The impressive Four Seasons is quite simply the best place to stay in Papagayo. It’s a well-rounded, highly luxurious retreat situated on a peninsula that juts out into the Gulf of Papagayo, an expansive body of water off Costa Rica’s north western coast. The villas and suites are out of this world, and there’s an eclectic range of activities from hiking, electric biking and zip lining to surfing, boat excursions and colourful evening fiestas, all carefully tailored to the requirements of individual guests, couples and families. Back at base, the facilities are no less than excellent and include four swimming pools, four restaurants, a golf course, water sports facilities, a spa, tennis courts and more.
The hotel’s standard guest rooms are housed in three four-storey buildings, and the suites all stand alone. All rooms are air conditioned and have a private terrace with stunning views of either the ocean or the peninsula’s lush, unspoiled rainforest. Rooms are characterised by natural wood and stone finishes, bamboo furnishings and local art work along with finely presented marble bathrooms.
Each of the four restaurants offers a slightly different, albeit high quality, experience. Classic Italian fare is served at Pesce, while Anejo specialises in lighter cuisine and has live music in the evening, and Bahia offers more sophisticated meals with food prepared at its open-air, wood-fired kitchen. There’s also La Reserva which focuses largely on drinks; we highly recommend the Latin American rum tasting sessions which take place here.
The on-site facilities are superb. The four swimming pools include a family friendly pool, and another one just for adults. The TropicSurf School offers several water sports, such as paddle boarding, snorkelling and kayaking, to people of all skill levels. There’s also a highly rated 18-hole golf course and no fewer than five tennis courts, with private lessons and player matchups on offer. For those looking to unwind, there are yoga classes on the beach, while those keen to keep up with their exercise regime can take part in fitness classes. As for off-site activities, there are birdwatching walks, horseback riding sessions and more. Keen surfers can surf the legendary ‘Witches Rock’ and ‘Ollie’s Point’ happy in the knowledge that their companions have plenty to do back at the hotel.
Children of all ages are welcome to stay here and there’s a full programme of age-appropriate ‘Kids for All Seasons’ activities for youngsters from cookery classes to snorkelling, sailing lessons, beach volleyball and football. The children’s centre is open daily is open daily for 4 to 12 year olds and offers plenty of outdoor fun. There’s even a club house just for teenagers. Child-friendly menus are available in all of the restaurants and many of the rooms have flexible layouts to accommodate families of different sizes.
We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!
The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.
I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.
The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.
All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).
From my seven-year-old son:
I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.
In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

We just wanted to thank you for an absolutely amazing holiday. Everything went exactly to plan and we were blown away with the quality of the guides, transport and accommodation. The itinerary was perfect for our family with a great mix of guided and free days and the different destinations complemented each other well. We will definitely be using Tourdust again for our next trip! Particular highlights were the Ha Long Bay cruise, Hanoi, and the morning cycle tour in Siam Reap
