Overview

Xandari Resort and Spa is the pick of places to stay for a first or last night in Costa Rica (or longer if you have the time). It has stunning hillside views, 3 elegant swimming pools an even on site walking trails to waterfalls.

Located just 20 minutes from San Jose’s international airport, this deluxe rural retreat offers spacious contemporary accommodation in unspoilt, secluded surroundings. This eco-friendly resort boasts 24 well-appointed villas with panoramic views, a restaurant, three swimming pools, a spa, and a yoga studio, all nestled within 40 acres of tropical plantation, forest, rivers, and waterfalls. It’s a fantastic higher end choice for travellers looking for an exclusive, tranquil base within easy reach of the airport and San Jose.

Communal areas include an airy restaurant with super views which serves international and Costa Rican cuisine throughout the day made from organic ingredients grown on the estate. Xandari promotes several environmentally-friendly practices including the use of solar power, recycling, and a tree planting initiative aimed at reintroducing indigenous species to the reserve. There are no less than three heated saltwater pools, all with lovely views, including a 125-foot pool which faces the sunset. The spa offers a wide array of treatments and massages, along with alfresco hot tubs and a Jacuzzi. There’s a small library and a TV room with a good choice of DVDs. Board and card games are available from reception, and there’s also a table tennis table, plus two on-site gift shops.

Activities include guided and self-guided hiking through the estate’s woodland trails and tropical plantations. Birdwatching excursions are also possible, with over 140 species noted to date. The spectacular Poas Volcano crater, one of the world’s largest active volcanos, is about 20 minutes’ drive away and well worth a visit.

The accommodation comprises 24 bright and stylish villas dotted throughout the estate, all featuring high timber ceilings, contemporary architecture, vibrant interior design and original artwork. Varying in size, each spacious villa has a king or two double beds, with some units housing an additional sofa bed in the lounge area. The expansive ‘Star Villa’ villa offers a whopping 132 square metres of living space, including a king size master bedroom, a second bedrooms with two double beds, two bathrooms, a lounge, dining area, study, and a full kitchen. All units come with satellite TV, CD and DVD player, hot drink facilities, mini bar, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi. And each villa has a private garden terrace with lovely views.

Children are extremely welcome at the resort, there are plenty of accommodation options and reductions are available for little ones under 4 years of age.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We just wanted to thank you for an absolutely amazing holiday. Everything went exactly to plan and we were blown away with the quality of the guides, transport and accommodation. The itinerary was perfect for our family with a great mix of guided and free days and the different destinations complemented each other well. We will definitely be using Tourdust again for our next trip! Particular highlights were the Ha Long Bay cruise, Hanoi, and the morning cycle tour in Siam Reap
