Perched on the top of a spectacular granite rock formation is Big Cave Camp, a pleasantly intimate safari lodge that can only be accessed by 4x4 due to its somewhat remote location. Tucked away on the border of Zimbabwe’s Matobo Hills National Park, the camp affords breath-taking views of the park’s unspoiled plains, not to mention the many wild animals that roam the area. The lodge’s buildings are designed to blend into the impressive rock upon which they rest, whilst its architecture and decor pay homage to local Zimbabwean culture.
There are three accommodation options to choose from. The eight standard lodges are constructed from granite and have thatched roofs to help keep the rooms cool during the hotter summer months. They also house en-suite bathrooms and private balconies with lovely views. Secondly, there's the campsite which has plenty of facilities, including communal washing premises, a laundry and a bar. Finally, the Ndebele village huts, where guests are encouraged to stay at least for one night, offer a more authentic experience, although they do come with modern conveniences such as a power socket and electricity.
There are plenty of nature-based activities to enjoy, along with a good range of exciting excursions which reveal the fascinating landscapes and wildlife of the Matobo National Park. Examples include game viewing expeditions, mountain bike racing, bird watching walks and cultural trips to nearby villages. Rhino conservation is at the fore here since the local area is home to one of Zimbabwe’s last remaining rhino populations. Rhino tracking is a real highlight - led by a professional guide, guests have the rare opportunity to approach rhinos, as well as other game, on foot.
When not exploring the surrounding area, there’s a refreshing natural rock pool back at the lodge, along with a lounge and bar. There’s also an open sundeck and a well-stocked library offering plenty of peace and solitude. Traditional outdoor dining experiences are on offer, with a good selection of locally inspired dishes to choose from. For a more ‘quirky’ dining experience, there’s also the lodge’s main dining room which has a large rock at its centre and a cluster of trees growing through its roof!
Children of all ages are very welcome, there are family rooms and twin chalets on offer, and the pool to splash about in. Families should bear in mind, however, that some of the principal activities in the area involve a certain level of physical exertion so it may not be an ideal destination for toddlers or very young children. Parents are reminded that due to the lodge’s wild location, children of all ages must remain under constant adult supervision.
We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!
The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.
I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.
The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.
All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).
From my seven-year-old son:
I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.
In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths. Will be a trip we remember forever
