Overview

Zambezi Expeditions is a traditional bush camp in a peaceful riverside location in Mana Pools National Park, northern Zimbabwe. Open from April to November, this unpretentious camp sits shaded by ebony trees on the banks of the iconic Zambezi River, in the heart of the national park, and offers select hosting and expert guiding to just 12 guests. Remote and unspoilt, Mana Pools is an UNESCO world heritage site, its floodplains and riverine woodland drawing abundant seasonal numbers of elephant, lion, wild dog, buffalo, leopard, and the occasional cheetah, along with prolific birdlife. Intimate and tranquil, the camp will appeal to travellers seeking an authentic bush camp experience in a true wilderness setting.

The main area in camp is an open-sided mess tent, containing a long dining table for communal meals, and a lounge area with comfy sofas, both with wonderful views of the Zambezi. Outside is a campfire area with seating. Power is supplied by generator, with battery charging facilities available in the main area. Note that visitors during October and November may experience extremely high temperatures, however this is when wildlife density is at its peak.

A range of land and water based activities includes game drives, guided walks, birdwatching, canoeing, and tiger fishing (catch and release). The camp offers excellent walking safaris with highly trained, experienced guides, often resulting in thrilling up-close encounters with wildlife. Canoe safaris are a great opportunity to get close to the Zambezi’s water-loving residents, including elephant, hippo, and crocodile.

The accommodation comprises six compact but comfortable meru-style safari tents. Each tent is simply furnished with twin beds, storage space, and an ensuite bathroom with flush WC and traditional alfresco hot bucket showers.

Children age seven years and over are welcome at Zambezi Expeditions, and discounts are available for guests under 12 years of age when sharing with an adult. Note that there is a minimum age restriction of 16 years for walking safaris and canoeing, with nature walks around camp available as an alternative. The camp has a riverbank location and is unfenced, and wildlife regularly roam through. Although it is unlikely that animals would approach people or tents, parents are reminded that children must be supervised at all times.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever
