The Spitzkoppe are a series of bald granite peaks in central Namibia’s Namib Desert which are over 150 million years old. The family-run Spitzkoppen Lodge, named after these fascinating geological formations, is an elegant and private resort set right into these towering granite outcrops. The property has a friendly feel and incredible views of the surrounding scenery, not to mention plenty of space and comfort, a modest swimming pool and a good range of activities from biking and climbing, to rock art and cultural tours.
There are 15 en-suite chalets which are linked to one another and the lodge’s main reception building by a series of wheelchair-accessible, raised walkways. Each chalet has its own shaded viewing deck for admiring the dramatic, unspoiled scenery. To help fend off mosquitos, nets are provided for all beds and all windows are fitted with gauze. While families are welcome, note that the rural nature of the lodge and the raised walkways mean that it is not recommended for families with children below 6 years of age.
The restaurant showcases an array of local and national dishes and international options are also regularly available. There’s also a bar serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and a sociable lounge area for unwinding and catching up on the day’s events. Views from these areas are particularly scenic, especially in the evening when boulders close by are lit up. Also on-site are a swimming pool with a fire pit area and a curio shop selling all sorts of locally produced arts and crafts, not to mention gems sourced from nearby mines.
There’s a good range of activities to participate in. Rock climbing is a popular pursuit here - in fact, Spitzkoppe is renowned as the top rock-climbing destination in Namibia, offering stunning views of the desert and in excess of a hundred different climbing routes. Biking and self-guided photography tours to several noteworthy Skitzkoppe sites are also worth participating in, as are horseback riding sessions and even guided abseiling trips. Crystal tours showcase the lives of local miners and the treasures they uncover in the mines, while trips to archaeological sites offer the chance to see ancient paintings and other surviving pieces of rock art.
We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!
The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.
I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.
The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.
All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).
From my seven-year-old son:
I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.
In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths. Will be a trip we remember forever
