Overview

A delightful beach resort looking out on to Indian Ocean, The Frangipani Tree is located near the west end of a long, white-sand beach that’s a great place to relax and unwind. The resort’s ocean-side setting is undoubtedly one of its best features: sit back and relax on the sandy beach and watch stilt fisherman as they catch fish, or even turtles as they lay their eggs in beach’s fine sands. The resort is named after the sweet-scented frangipani tree, known for its colourful yellow and pink flowers and, of course, its lovely aroma - many of these trees are to be found scattered across the resort.

In keeping with the area, each one of the resort’s three villas is named after a different species of turtle: Leatherback, Olive Ridley and Hawksbill. Rooms are spacious, contemporary in design and minimalist in what they offer. There are no flat-screen TVs here since the focus is on the location and its natural beauty, rather than high-tech amenities and technology. Each villa houses three exceptionally well furnished suites, with plenty of high-quality amenities. Lounge about on a sun bed, enjoy an al fresco dinner on a private, shaded veranda and enjoy a very comfortable night’s sleep in a king size four-poster bed that comes with luxurious linens and even a choice of pillows. There's also air conditioning and a ceiling fan.

Wholesome breakfasts are served on private guest terraces and traditional Sri Lankan dishes can be sampled for lunch and dinner at the restaurant. Alternatively, head into Galle and try one of the many restaurants there. While there, be sure to check out Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that features many landmarks of historical, archaeological and cultural importance. Further afield, there’s the Yala National Park that's home to 44 mammal species and 215 bird species, and the Hiyare Forest Reserve. Hikes through the Rumassala Medicinal Forest (the setting for lots of local mysteries and fables) are also on offer, along with visits to the nearby turtle hatchery. While the ocean here is often unsuitable for swimming, there's always the pool to dip into, not to mention the tennis courts and spa.

Children of all ages are welcome to stay at The Frangipani Tree, though the resort does perhaps have quite an adult feel. There are two pairs of suites with interconnecting rooms and three suites with capacity for extra beds. Because the resort is right by the ocean, we strongly recommend that parents keep an eye on their children at all times.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We just wanted to thank you for an absolutely amazing holiday. Everything went exactly to plan and we were blown away with the quality of the guides, transport and accommodation. The itinerary was perfect for our family with a great mix of guided and free days and the different destinations complemented each other well. We will definitely be using Tourdust again for our next trip! Particular highlights were the Ha Long Bay cruise, Hanoi, and the morning cycle tour in Siam Reap
