Overview

Situated right in the very heart of Galle Fort is The Fort Bazaar, a 17th century former merchant’s townhouse that’s been lovingly maintained over the years and now functions as a boutique hotel. It recently underwent a nine-year renovation to bring its facilities up to contemporary standards, so even though it’s quite a historic property, guests staying here won’t be without their modern conveniences. Though the hotel’s outward appearance certainly does fit in with the rest of Galle Fort’s historical properties, on the inside it’s decidedly chic and stylish, with a pleasant atmosphere throughout. This hotel is part of the Teardrop chain, a collection of five hotels scattered throughout Sri Lanka.

There are 18 air-conditioned bedrooms in total, and four classes of accommodation altogether. Each of the Banyan Bedrooms has its own private terrace or verandah, while the slightly smaller Bazaar Bedrooms overlook the hotel’s central courtyard. The Upper Suite offers views of the fort and has its own private balcony with views of the streets. All classes of accommodation come with plenty of amenities, such as bathrobes, tea and coffee making facilities, a satellite TV with DVD player, a minibar and a range of complimentary toiletries.

Guests staying here are very well placed for exploring Galle Fort, with its many cultural and historical sites, shops, bars and restaurants just steps away from the hotel. Galle Fort is known for being one of the finest examples of a European-style fortified city in all of Asia. It’s home to a wealth of important and interesting sites, with many museums, churches, monuments, temples and the like within walking distance.

Even though there’s plenty to experience in Galle Fort itself, The Fort Bazaar has plenty of on-site facilities of its own. The Church Street Social is the hotel’s air conditioned restaurant and is open to the public, as well as hotel guests. Those staying at the hotel who want a bit more privacy can choose to dine in the courtyard or by the pool. The property also has a small spa offering a number of relaxing treatments, as well as a cinema with enough room to hold 10 people.

The hotel welcomes children of all ages and offers a babysitting service which is available upon request. For family accommodation, two of the Bazaar Double Bedrooms interconnect with Bazaar Twin Bedrooms - these sleep four and open out onto the central courtyard. Alternatively, families of four can occupy two slightly smaller Banyan Double Bedrooms which interconnect with Banyan Twin Bedrooms and open onto a balcony/veranda. Last but not least, there’s the split-level Upper Family Suite which is the most spacious option and comes with enhanced facilities. This suite sleeps up to five and has a beautifully-proportioned room on the lower floor with a king-sized four-posted bed and open plan lounge, and on the upper mezzanine there are two single beds. The suite has a large bathroom with rain-shower and bathtub, and a terrace with views of Galle Fort. Do get in touch since we can advise families on the best rooms based on particular requirements.

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair

  • Dear Lisa
Well, we are back and still buzzing. We have had a marvellous time. The weather helped. We left Manchester in the snow and arrived in Marrakesh at 30 degrees. We were well looked after in the Riad. I'm glad we booked a meal for the first evening - ate it on the roof terrace. We can recommend that. It was delicious. We ate at the Foundouk, as per your recommendation and on the following night we ate at Le Jardin - got lost on the way to it!. We can really recommend Le Jardin.
The following day we went to Majorelle gardens. Fortunately we had looked it up before we travelled because you have to book in advance online only from Jan 2023. We found our own way to the Medera Ben Yousef and Latifa took us to Bahia Palace - both were stunning.
The following morning our lovely taxi driver Mohammond collected us to go to the EcoLodge. Yet another Mohammond made us very welcome. Again we ate well! You were right, the pool was freezing, but I can't sit next to water and not get in. Once you're in you forget how cold it is! I wasn't the only person to try the pool.
Rashid, our guide for our walk collected us. He was brilliant. It was hard work, but worth it. I was determined I would make it. Kevin is fitter than me! The Berber family were lovely. We stopped when we were nearly there to see how rag rugs were made. When we got back Rashid and Mohammond confessed that Mohammond had said to Rashid that he should get us to a road if we got too tired and they would send a taxi (or a mule!) to collect us - or me, but Rashid was sure that I'd be OK. He was right. I think they wondered about these 2 70+ year olds. We can't praise Rashid enough. He had walked over from Imlil in the morning and was going to walk back after he left us.
Thank you so much for putting our holiday together. We never thought it would be 3 years before we went. We are so glad we persevered. We did wonder what we had let ourselves in for as 2 oldies!
    Fiona and Kevin
