Overview

The luxurious ‘Islands of Siankaba’ camp spans across two private islands and occupies a breath-taking riverine location between Zambia’s famed Chobe National Park, and the world renowned Victoria Falls. This secluded, independent property was established some twenty years ago by Siankaba, headman of the local area, in partnership with the local community, and the mutually beneficial relationship continues to thrive and provide plenty of local employment today. Offering a high level of creature comforts despite its rural location, the camp is designed to blend in with its natural surroundings. Its seven tented chalets are set out along the riverbank, with a series of interconnecting walkways and bridges that link the two islands while also offering superb views of the Zambezi River. A spa service and good sized pool are available, along with a warm and professional team of staff and convenient access to a wide range of activities.

Surrounded by natural beauty and far away from any crowds, Siankaba is perfect for a peaceful getaway. The open lounge blends subtly into the natural forest, the stone terrace directly overlooks the river, and guests will awaken to the view of the sun rising over the Zambezi River from the comfort of their rooms. Of the seven tented chalets, six are classed as luxury rooms, each with a private viewing deck overlooking the Zambezi River, an ensuite bathroom with huge tub and separate shower, a selection of aromatherapy products, and a mini-bar. The seventh room is the honeymoon suite, where private meals can be provided upon request. All rooms have ceiling fans, which guests visiting during the extremely high temperatures of October and November will certainly appreciate.

Several activity options are included in any stay at Siankaba. Visitors can enjoy spectacular sunset cruises, a visit to the local community nursery school and the rest of the Siankaba village, and buy trinkets at the Curio market shop. Catch-and-release fishing is also available on a seasonal basis, and guests seeking privacy can request a picnic island lunch. Victoria Falls is a bustling town only 24 miles away. A tour of the Falls is automatically included, and guests are also free to book additional activities such as abseiling, bungy jumping, canoeing, elephant back safaris, golf, micro-lite flights, and tours of Mosi O Tunya National Park and Chobe National Park, all subject to additional cost.

While families are certainly welcome, and many of the activities will suit all age groups, the lodge does have a tranquil, adult atmosphere that might not combine well with families with younger children, so the camp accommodates children of ten years and over. The bedrooms sleep a maximum of three guests per room, either in three single beds, or in one king size bed plus a single. Parents should note that bath areas in the rooms are open plan, and that the lodge is very open to the water and there is a drop from the decks. This, combined with the lodge’s wilderness location, means that children should be closely supervised at all times.

  • Trip was great and all the arrangements were excellent so thank you for all the help!

Drivers and transfers were all good - on time and very good service on each trip.

Accommodation was lovely - Douar Samra was amazing (weather could have been better but lovely regardless). Riad in Marrakesh was also great!

All in all a great trip and we loved the variety of the mountains, Marrakesh and the coast.

    Thanks you once again!

  • I was also just about to email you to thank you and the team for arranging yet again, another wonderful experience.

Mount Kenya was spectacular and wild - I think I prefer it to Kili in many ways. The entire support team was professional, friendly and all round fantastic in making sure that we were safe, well fed and well looked after. In particular, we would commend Peter the guide as well as Paul one of the porters who doubled-up as his deputy on summit day. Our route was often shrouded in mist and rain that rapidly gathered in the valleys and moorlands, and we were very impressed at how Peter managed to navigate us safely through all of that notwithstanding. In addition, we loved learning about the history of Mount Kenya from him in the evenings. And ofcourse, I was blown away by the lovely birthday surprise at the end complete with balloons and a delicious cake that had journeyed with us from day 1. One thing we might recommend because of the sudden change in weather (it would sometimes get extremely cold and wet) is for the equipment list to be a little bit more detailed in terms of its recommendations e.g. layers to be moisture-wicking, walking boots be waterproof, doubling up on socks to avoid blisters etc.

El Karama is a beautiful conservancy and the lodge a true labour of love. Great hospitality in a relaxed environment. Delicious, fresh food. We enjoyed the drives, even if we didn't see much wildlife as the heavens opened on us for the last two outings. However, since it was very much geared towards families, I am not sure if I would stay again without kids. That said, I think it was perfect for a 3d/2n stay post mountain, and a much better choice than flying to the masai mara given the limited time we had.

Our transits were smooth. Samuel the driver was always on time, drove safely and kept the vehicle clean.

So it was a brilliant experience and one which I certainly will cherish for some time to come. It was great to work with you for a third time, and I certainly hope it won't be the last

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”
