Tangala House in Livingstone, Zambia, is the private home of the founders of Tongabezi, a group of stylish houses and cottages nestled on the banks of the Zambezi River. This exclusive four-bedroomed property is open to guests from June to August and during the Christmas and Easter holidays when the founders are away. The house sleeps up to six people in four beautiful, air-conditioned bedrooms with stunning mosaic-tiled bathrooms complete with claw-footed bathtubs. A well-equipped private gym, large pool, and playroom for children are key features of this high-end retreat. Guests are extremely well looked after throughout their stay by a private team of staff from the main Tongabezi Lodge. The surroundings are breath taking, and watching elephants drinking from the river, or hippos and crocodiles peeking through the surface of the water is a delight.

Unlike other lodges in the area, those who stay at Tangala House have full control of their own itinerary and can make use of the private boat for river excursions, and the 4WD for safaris or transport to the nearby village. There’s a wide range of all-inclusive activities on offer, which guests can book at a time to suit themselves. From canoeing on the river to take a closer look at the crocodiles, to sunset or sunrise river cruises, there's plenty to do. Private game drives will reveal elephants in their natural habitat, along with a great variety of birdlife. Zambia’s national bird, the African Fish Eagle, is the most commonly seen bird in the area. Guided visits to the nearby Victoria Falls, the Maramba markets, the villages of Simonga and Tujatane, or the local school are also on offer. The Livingstone Museum is certainly worth a visit, although this is subject to an additional entry fee.

After an adventure-packed day, we recommend retreating back to the house to relax in the substantial 13 metre private pool, watch a show on the satellite TV, or make use of the uncapped WiFi access. There’s a cosy fireplace for cooler months, and guests are free to relax any time in the living room or under the open-thatched veranda. Note that there are three friendly dogs who are permanent residents at the house.

Tangala House is very welcoming to families. In fact, the whole house has been designed with families in mind. In addition to the four double bedrooms, three of which are en-suite, there is a playroom with toys and books for younger family members. The pool has a shallow end so everyone can enjoy playing in the water, and the whole house has glass windows designed to keep insects out. Parents are advised that the property is unfenced, so children must be supervised at all times.

  • It was FANTASTIC! Beautifully organised, everything worked like clockwork. We agreed that we had the best support team ever (and we have experience) - all delightful, very professional and nothing was too much bother.

It clearly couldn't have been a better route, such a wonderful mix of landscapes. And plenty of acclimatisation time. Nonetheless, I was glad of my summit oxygen.

Kit excellent. Double good mattresses made for most comfortable trek camping ever. Tents v good. Mess tent pretty windproof, which was vital for enjoyment. Best camp loo ever!

My favourite day was Shira Cathedral. Amazing.

  • Hi Lisa,

The safari trip was excellent! The stay, the food and the people were all very nice. We were happy to have Ryan and Stanley as our game drive guides they brought us up close to the animals and Ryan gave very good information throughout.

Would definitely recommend to friends who are interested in safaris :)

Also, thanks much for your help, particularly keeping the room for my Brother and his wife they’ve enjoyed the safari very much too!

    Best regards,
    Woan Chyi

  • We had a fantastic time and all the arrangements worked perfectly.
We were very impressed with the quality and service levels of all 4 locations visited and it was truly a holiday of a lifetime.
Thank you to you and to Lisa for giving us this experience.
Particular highlights for us – really the whole experience, but of particular impact:
Breathtaking scenery at Cathedral Peak Hotel
Rhino Ridge game drives incredible, thanks to guide (we had their head guide, Hala, who’s knowledge, enthusiasm, kindness, interaction, ability to spot wildlife was out of this world)
Luxury of Rhino Ridge (shower, food, views, service)
Immersion in nature, torch lit meal on last night and beach trip at Kosi Forest Lodge
Level of service, quality of food throughout
